CBC News is looking for a skilled investigative journalist to work with our new and still developing visual investigations unit. This team relies on open source information and digital forensic techniques to break new stories while experimenting with distinct and innovative treatments. A sample of our work can be found here: come prepared to our daily pitch meetings - actively watching ongoing news developments for investigative angles and quick-turn scoops. You are the kind of producer that can manage multiple projects of varying lengths and formats under tight deadlines and can translate complex findings into clear narratives. Were making news with original OSINT-driven investigations and are also deeply committed to building and training a community of journalists across CBC. Thats why we need someone who is fiercely competitive about this kind of journalism and intensely collaborative about how we do this kind of reporting.
This role primarily requires expertise in OSINT and digital forensic research. The ideal candidate has extensive experience with investigative reporting field producing video producing and filing on multiple broadcast and digital platforms. Working side-by-side with a senior reporter you have the unique capacity and willingness to juggle multiple indepth projects while still regularly collaborating with other journalists across the CBC newsroom and within the international OSINT community. This means its an in person in newsroom position.
Key Responsibilities
Investigative Story Production
Pitch investigative stories
Apply evidence-based investigative techniques to analyze complex issues and events.
Cultivate sources conduct interviews and analyze documents and financial records.
Develop and pursue leads using both digital and traditional reporting methods.
Structure complex information into clear accurate journalistic narratives that adhere to CBC journalistic standards and practices.
Fact-check.
Collaborate with editorial design and technical teams.
Open-Source and digital forensic analysis
Identify collect and analyze public information from diverse sources (social media government data dark web satellite imagery).
Apply advanced search methods and specialized tools to find hard-to-locate data.
Verify information authenticity through cross-referencing and source triangulation.
Conduct digital investigations: trace online footprints interactions and networks.
Analyze metadata from digital files for intelligence.
Visual Investigations & Verification:
Find verify and analyze visual evidence (photos videos satellite imagery).
Use geolocation and chronolocation to pinpoint event locations and times.
Perform forensic analysis of visual media to detect manipulation and verify authenticity.
Reconstruct events based on visual evidence.
Verify User-Generated Content (UGC) for authenticity origin and context.
Qualifications:
5 years of experience in video journalism
5 years of experience in investigative reporting
Demonstrated ability to produce high-impact video-first stories.
Exceptional visual and written storytelling skills
Familiarity with CBCs production workflows and working with Premiere/Adobe video editors
Advanced proficiency in OSINT methods experience in digital verification geolocation and metadata analysis.
Some experience with data journalism and access to information process in Canada.
Outstanding news judgment adherence to journalistic ethics rigorous attention to detail
Experience with investigative fact-checking process and methodologies
Ability to work collaboratively and calmly under tight deadlines in high-pressure environments.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Willingness to travel or work weekends as needed for reporting assignments.
