DescriptionIn this role the Casting Manufacturing Engineering Supervisor will provide leadership for powertrain and structural castings from the initial concept and development through product launch. Your team will work with Product Development and Suppliers to successfully develop and launch next-generation structural high pressure die castings. Successful candidates will have a proven record of leadership and product launch experience with the development and implementation of complex castings.
This team will be focused on both the cast and trim tooling necessary for high pressure die casting. This includes the development of tooling standards development of both casting and trim tooling designs and the equipment and processes to maintain and repair both cast and trim this role you will also have the responsibility to lead and develop a process is a new to Ford manufacturing process and must combine both technical and leadership capabilities to drive success. Ideal candidates must navigate and drive change in a complex internal environment challenging the status quo as we define an all-new way of manufacturing vehicles.
ResponsibilitiesWhat youll do:
- Lead a manufacturing engineering team to execute casting design reviews set cast and trim tooling design strategy and select our supplier partners to help deliver the will also include the selection and commissioning of equipment to maintain the tooling. Ultimately supporting launch and handoff of the tooling equipment and processes to our manufacturing facility partners.
- Utilize knowledge of quality processes and systems to meet stringent industry and customer requirements.
- Drive Voice of Manufacturing throughout product development lifecycle to ensure robust feasible and manufacturable casting assembly designs.
- Define and launch formal equipment and process standards for high pressure die cast tooling casting and maintenance equipment.
- Deliver on-time and on-budget launches for upcoming Casting programs.
- Lead scope-of-work development and competitive bidding exercises for Unicasting manufacturing systems.
- Perform supervisory duties including but not limited to objective and goal development development discussions and performance reviews.
- Assess employee competencies and support development and upskilling as necessary. Mentor less experienced employees within and outside of the organization related to Casting Engineering.
- Support simultaneous engineering and feasibility engineering studies among product engineering manufacturing engineering and supplier organizations.
- Support the supplier selection evaluation process through manufacturing assessments and assist Purchasing in the evaluation development and selection of suppliers and subcontractors.
- Evaluate innovative and disruptive emerging processes and material technologies for potential application to Ford products.
- Support Product Engineering in the selection and specification of component materials and test procedures.
- Define preventive maintenance frequencies and tool life standards for better process performance and productivity.
- Lead design for cast tooling components (cavities inserts and injection components) and trim dies and ensuring change control management of the tooling.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
- BSc Engineering (Mechanical Industrial or Electrical) OR equivalent experience (10 years prior experience with high pressure die casting.)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to demonstrate you can lead a team.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to present persuade and collaborate at all levels of the organization.
- Proficient level knowledge of high pressure die casting process and tooling.
- Proficient level knowledge of die design manufacturing and development processes.
- Competent knowledge of the secondary operations associated with castings including but not limited to trimming fettling deburring and quality checks.
- Knowledge of alloys used for structural and powertrain castings and melting operations and metal quality.
- Knowledge of the different die spray release processes and different lubricant types used.
- Knowledge of hot work tool steels and die coatings.
- Experience with the development of a shot curve and development of a process for a new casting.
- Understanding of MagmaSoft or other casting simulation software results.
- Experience performing casting manufacturing feasibility assessments. This includes the understanding of PQ2 projected area and how to assess the feasibility of a part die and die casting machine system.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions in a fast paced dynamic environment.
- Highly motivated self-starter capable of driving change and influencing engineering decisions with or without authority.
- Foundry operational experience in casting manufacturing processes and tooling department.
- Proven track record of delivering major product launches in an automotive manufacturing facility.
- Ability to work in a production setting and aid in troubleshooting of equipment and processes.
- Possess practical problem-solving skill and the ability to address a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to travel both domestically and internationally.
- Travel may be required from 25% - up to 80% of time.
- The lower end means working from home base (Dearborn) with minimum travel to Supplier/Vendors Test facilities or out of state (of Michigan) Plants/Suppliers.
- The higher end of travel means supporting implementation/launch teams on site at the out of state (of Michigan) Plants/Suppliers. This could require traveling from 3 months up to 1 years working on-site at a Plant.
