The Environmental Epidemiologist position is assigned to the Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch (OEEB) one of four branches within the Epidemiology Section Division of Public Health Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). OEEB is responsible for a wide range of activities including: collecting and analyzing data regarding environmental and occupational risks to public health in North Carolina; responding to public health emergencies including the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters; evaluating the scientific literature and available technical data to provide evidence based public health recommendations; developing and implementing programs to prevent exposures to environmental or occupational hazards; assisting local health departments state agencies and other partners in the implementation of recommended policies and programs; and promoting public health.

The Environmental Epidemiologist is responsible for supporting data management analysis visualization and reporting as a key member of the CDC-funded Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) team. Data analysis and visualization are focused on environmental exposures health outcomes climate change and social determinants of health for the NC Environmental Health Data Dashboard. The position uses SAS R Tableau and other software as needed and helps the EPHT team with CDC data calls and completion of grant deliverables reporting and renewals. The Environmental Epidemiologist works with community organizations and state and local partners and assists with epidemiological investigations and public health responses as needed. The position participates in CDC EPHT meetings and/ or Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) environmental epidemiology-related content working groups helps to write manuscripts and presents findings at regional state and national meetings and conferences. The position may supervise temporary employees or interns. The position reports to the OEEB Epidemiology Supervisor who also serves as the Principal Investigator for EPHT. About the Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch (OEEB):The Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch deals with environmental and occupational conditions and hazards that may pose a risk to human health. OEE identifies and quantifies exposures to environmental and occupational contaminants; conducts risk assessments and risk communication; provides medical evaluation and surveillance for adverse health effects; and provides health-based guidance on levels of exposure to such contaminants.

Masters degree in Epidemiology or closely related health field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of related experience
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
