The Opportunity

We have a 12-month fixed term role for a Senior Legal Counsel to provide technically excellent risk aware and commercially sensible legal support to the business. This role supports the RLA business and involves advising on life insurance superannuation financial services and general corporate & commercial matters.

The opening is for someone with experience advising on litigation and dispute resolution ideally in relation to life insurance and other financial services this role you will focus on life insurance disputes before the Courts and Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) and may also be involved in other disputes such as Regulatory Commercial Superannuation and Investments and Employment disputes.

How will you make an impact

  • Take a lead role in managing the conduct and resolution of disputes and litigated matters

  • Manage external disputes lodged with AFCA and other external bodies

  • Manage and instruct external law firms

  • Effectively communicate with senior management/stakeholders around key legal issues and potential risks to the Resolution Life business

  • Provide commercially focused high-quality legal advice

  • Support capability uplift and mentor other team members

  • Lead by example role-modelling collaboration innovation and technical and service excellence

About you:

  • Australian legal qualifications and a current Australian unrestricted practising certificate.

  • Experience acting or advising on litigation and dispute resolution

  • Ability to constructively challenge consult and advise whilst maintaining solid relationships.

  • Ability to effectively negotiate influence and engage a broad range of senior internal and external stakeholders to drive business outcome.

  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.

  • Extensive knowledge and practical understanding of applicable regulatory requirements and legal practices.

  • Strong relationship management skills and an ability to interact professionally discretely and confidently so as to be a trusted legal adviser.

  • Excellent technical writing skills including the ability to review and draft legal documents policies and submissions.

  • Strong time management skills and ability to manage conflicting deadlines

  • Flexibility and adaptability to manage conflicting priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Ideal Experience:

  • 7 PQE experience in relevant subject matter areas.

  • Strong understanding of legal issues in financial services and life insurance.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Relevant experience and a proven track record in a financial services environment.

  • Good understanding of the Australian insurance and superannuation industries.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective stakeholder relationships.
