Ensures completion of pre-op assessment of patient measures and documents weight and height checks lab completion and vital signs.
Verifies parental consents are completed and signed for medication administered per policy.
Ensures completion of patient admission history. Prepares and accurately completes the discharge planning process per department and hospital policies and procedures.
Plans and implements the plan of care in collaboration with other disciplines and services to assure safe and efficient care.
Follows physicians orders and administers and reconstitutes medications as needed. Adheres to six rights of medication administration per medication administration policy.
Collaborates with a multi-disciplinary team (ICU Child Life Med-Surg etc.) in daily care planning as appropriate. Fosters a Family Centered Care Environment.
Monitors child continuously during procedure and reports any status changes. Immediately notifies physician and takes action on findings.
Prepares all medication required for surgical field as determined by the procedure.
Stays with the patient during emergence and extubation; assists Anesthesia as needed.
Ensures advanced directives are complete secures blood consents documents Time-Out procedures and administers antibiotics as per Universal Protocol.
Performs surgical counts and proper use of cautery machines throughout surgical procedures.
Circulates throughout cases and ensures all expiration dates of implants are checked prior to use of any implant during a case.
Ensures specific labs are run during cases (ACT ABGs and O2 saturation) and supports with positioning patient prior to procedure/surgery.
Interprets EKG throughout the case and takes appropriate actions based upon patient needs.
Assesses/maintains all IV drips and intra-cardiac lines central lines chest tubes and Foley catheters.
Assists in a collaborative manner with the transportation of all patients per policy and standard procedures.
Communicates with physician regarding patients progress including: critical findings critical lab results and changes in the patients condition. Performs & documents discharge plan per policy.
Ensures all surgical procedure documentation (labs consents advance directives and custody documentation) is obtained in a timely and accurate manner.
Accesses Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and performs charge reconciliation according to hospital policy. Completes accurate and timely documentation in the patients EMR.
Communicates with patients and families to review plan of care solicits input and communicates any patient and family concerns to physician.
Provides education and documents on patient/family teachings on health related needs (i.e. disease medications treatments pain discharge safety nutrition skin care etc.).
Promotes an error free working environment by consistently providing high-quality safe care as prompted (as per Universal Protocol Policy).
Provides patient information and effectively completes the hand off process at reassignments. Utilizes Same Day Surgery checklist.
Assesses all body systems ensures safe effective and efficient care delivery with emphasis on the absence of medication errors avoidance of falls and reduction of pain post-procedure.
BSN degree preferred or currently enrolled in BSN program.
Possesses proficiency in computers (EMR) Electronic Medical Record and Cerner preferred.
Career Development: National Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN) and/or equivalent certification within 5 years of hire preferred.
