Position Summary:

Join the MIU Writing Center team to provide academic writing support to students from diverse backgrounds and disciplines. As a Writing Center Consultant you will offer consultations at any stage of the writing process from brainstorming to revising while also creating engaging educational content for our social media platforms.

Students this Position Appeals to:

This position is ideal for students with strong writing skills who are passionate about helping their peers improve their writing abilities. All majors are welcome to apply especially Writing Majors or those interested in teaching tutoring or improving their own writing skills. Consultants will receive training in writing consultation best practices.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Assisting students with their writing assignments.
  2. Helping students clarify their writing objectives.
  3. Creating interesting writing exercises to help students broaden their writing opportunities.
  4. Working with online and on-campus students to answer questions and provide writing resources.
  5. Providing written feedback on writing assignments in person through email and through Zoom.
  6. Serving as a writing tutor for various courses as needed.
  7. Creating writing outreach opportunities for students through workshops interactive events or publications.

Job Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of Composition 2 or an equivalent writing course ensuring a solid foundation in advanced writing principles and techniques.
  • Proficiency with computer applications including Word and PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency in written communication demonstrating strong writing skills essential for providing effective guidance to students during consultations.
  • Ability to effectively engage with students at every level of writing aptitude in a one-on-one setting fostering a supportive and conducive environment for learning and skill development.
  • Availability for regularly scheduled on-campus work coupled with flexibility to accommodate asynchronous and Zoom appointments as necessary demonstrating commitment and adaptability to meet student needs.

Location: Writing Center room #116 within Wege Center for the Arts

Supervisor: Dylene Cymraes Writing Center Director

Dylene Cymraes holds an MA in Communication and Storytelling Studies from East Tennessee State University and a BFA in Creative Writing from MIU. She has authored five novels and written contributed to or edited more than 50 screenplays numerous business books blogs white papers and training programs. She is also a professional facilitator college instructor and storyteller.

Her published novels include the trilogy Moving Home and Pawn Tickets of the Soul. Her poetry appears in the American Journal of Poetry Sink Hollow and the Iowa Telepoem Project.

The MIU Writing Center is a free service for all MIU students. We offer academic writing support to students of all backgrounds and disciplines. Whether you are a graduate student undergraduate English language learner or native English speaker you are welcome to have a conversation with one of the writing consultants. Our staff is prepared to work with you on any part of the writing process from pre-writing to revising to working on a thesis or dissertation. Our writing consultants will provide you with immediate constructive responses and suggest strategies for improvement. Even the best writers need an extra set of eyes!
