Job Description

Reports To:Senior Director of Opportunity Youth

Position Overview:

It is the goal of Boston Public Schools (BPS) to effectively and efficiently support studentswith chronic absences. It is the duty of the Supervisor of Attendance (Field SOA) to assistschools students and families in utilizing all available prevention and interventionstrategies and to use court referrals as a last resort. The Supervisor of Attendance Field-Based (Field SOA) resides in the Department of Opportunity Youth reporting to theSenior Director of Opportunity Youth. The Field SOA is responsible for working with schooland district staff to help address attendance challenges and inform best practices related toattendance practices protocols and improvement initiatives as well as prevention andintervention strategies to advance the mission of the Boston Public Schools. The positionwill have a particular emphasis on technical assistance to use related systems and datatools while supporting school and district staff in addressing chronic absenteeism. After allother prevention and intervention strategies have been exhausted the Field SOA forwardschronic cases to the court-based SOA to be filed and ensures the Court SOA has allnecessary data and documents to represent the case in court.

Responsibilities:

School Support Collaboration and Community Engagement

  • Work closely with district leadership school staff students and parents as well ascommunity partners in attendance-related working with these various stakeholders the SOA is responsible for responding to requests and communications in a timely manner.
  • Monitor and support field-based activities and provide recommendations toimprove processes and supports. This includes but is not limited to appropriate prevention and intervention strategies and best practices to improve individual student and school-wide attendance.
  • Provide onsite school consultation sessions home visits student or family meetingsand problem-solving support for complex attendance cases
  • Work collaboratively with other Field SOAs to offer enhanced support when appropriate including technical assistance school visits and co-facilitating related activities.
  • Participate in meetings with Department of Opportunity Youth staff.
  • Represent OY through participation in attendance initiatives including the Attendance Symposium annual door-knocking and school- and district-based attendance improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain expertise and emphasis on attendance-related strategies to reconnect andsupport the needs of opportunity youth.
  • Maintain an understanding of how to use BPS systems to prevent truancy courtreferrals or reconnect students with school including through the BPS Reengagement Center career training or post-secondary education.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Senior Director of OpportunityYouth as long as the Supervisor of Attendance is not assigned any duties covered by the collective bargaining agreement of any other bargaining unit.

Systems Procedures and Data Management

  • Offer expertise guidance and best practices to better serve Bostons mostmarginalized communities.
  • Provide professional development and technical assistance to school-based anddistrict staff including but not limited to the development of the schools truancy prevention plan consistent prevention and intervention practices the use of the attendance intervention plan (AIP) system data systems and tools and attendance reporting processes and protocol.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of available services supports and access points withinOY and other BPS departments and community partners. When applicable ensure school staff students and families are connected to services through the Homeless Education Resource Network (HERN) and Home & Hospital Instruction Program or other relevant internal or external referral service.
  • Use data tools systems and reports to identify attendance-related trends and improvement areas.

Truancy Laws Attendance Standards and Court Process

  • Maintain a deep understanding and provide guidance to schools regarding Massachusetts Truancy Laws attendance processes and procedures as well asdistrict and state priorities related to chronic absenteeism. Perform duties with strategies to address chronic absenteeism as a priority work stream.
  • Assist schools to ensure all parents/guardians or students referred to court have ahad a parent meeting to discuss truancy prevention steps and resource referral needs in advance of their court date.
  • Conduct all appropriate field-based investigations of students who are referred forchronic absenteeism.
  • Ensure school staff enter the supporting data needed for case preparation in theStudent Information System (SIS) including but not limited to student attendance records journal entries and relevant supporting documentation. The Court SOA will prepare the cases referred to the Suffolk County Juvenile Court for filing. Cases include Adult Failure to Cause Child Requiring Assistance and Habitual School Offender.
  • The Field SOA will forward case outcomes from the Court SOA to their assignedschools.
  • Maintain knowledge and expertise of the truancy court process to serve as a back-up district representative for the Court SOA in truancy court cases.

Qualifications - Required:

  • Bachelors Degree
  • 3-5 years professional experience
  • When available obtain Massachusetts Supervisor of Attendance Certification within3 months of hire date
  • Demonstrated experience in developing spreadsheets reports and databasemanagement (Excel Google Sheets student information systems)
  • Experience working in schools communities or related
  • Experience working in marginalized or underserved communities
  • Culturally or linguistically relevant experience or skills
  • Strong collaborator with demonstrated success partnering with other professionalsorganizations or community members
  • Current authorization to work in the United States
  • An understanding of and commitment to gain greater understanding of what isnecessary for an urban school system to enjoy continuous improvement in an increasingly complex and competitive environment.
  • A deeply held and unyielding belief in the overarching mission of public education.
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts laws governing compulsory education and truancy.

Qualifications - Preferred:

  • Masters Degree in social work education or a related field
  • Familiarity with Boston and Boston Public Schools
  • Bilingual

Terms: BTU Group III.
