Summary:
This volunteer work is for those with an existing demonstrated knowledge looking to gain practical experience with human osteology. Volunteers will work to identify human remains to determine MNI (and age and sex as possible/needed). The remains come from various archaeological sites around Ohio meaning that they are most often the ancestors of American Indians. Certain practices are followed to respect cultural sensitivities at the request of our tribal partners. All work is done with the intent to repatriate. Volunteers will learn about this process and the law (NAGPRA) as well as gain experience with osteology. Some work with material culture may be necessary but training will be provided. Note: depending on experience level you may be required to volunteer in the OSU lab prior to coming to Ohio History Connection.
