Job Description

Job Summary

This role bridges Active Equities (AE) department level portfolio strategy and our Investment Partnerships program which AE pursues in collaboration with CPPs External Portfolio Management (EPM) team. A portion of the role will be dedicated to underwriting and monitoring of external equity hedge fund managers in partnership with EPM and facilitate adoption of acquired knowledge and Investment Partnership across AE. The role will also contribute to AE capital planning allocation frameworks and departmentwide portfolio reviews.

Team Summary

Our Active Equities mandate is to deliver alpha in the global public equity markets. The department leverages CPP Investments structural competitive advantages and Active Equities sources of edge to exploit alpha opportunities through proprietary company specific fundamental research. Our fundamental insights yield a collection of high-conviction single-company investments that are assembled into a highly concentrated long/short market-neutral portfolio via an optimization process that aims to remove unintended factor exposures. The result is a portfolio with maximum exposure to our proprietary research and little else.

The Portfolio Strategy function supports AE in aligning capital allocation investment design and operational execution with long-term strategic objectives. The team works across disciplines to enhance investment decision-making and ensure effective coordination with internal and external partners.

Accountabilities

Investment Partnerships

  • Diligence prospective external managers in partnership with External Portfolio Management (EPM).
  • Contribute to (or lead) preparation of screening memos and comparative analytics.
  • In collaboration with EPM execute quantitative and qualitative due diligence modules including investment strategy deep-dives building financial models conducting reference calls reviewing operational risk assessments and analyzing fee/terms benchmarking.
  • Co-lead (or lead) the joint AEEPM approval workflow; draft Investment Committee (IC) papers and coordinate responses to follow ups.
  • Partner with EPM and Risk to monitor manager performance factor exposures and capacity; proactively flag deviations.
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer by structuring scheduling and documenting sessions between selected managers and AE/EPM investment staff; distill insights into AE playbooks and sector meetings.
  • Drive cross functional project plans with EPM Legal Operations Risk and Finance to ensure timely funding and onboarding.
  • Monitor evolving trends and shifts among external fundamental equity managers.

AE Portfolio Strategy

  • Assist in developing and refreshing AEs multiyear portfolio strategy by gathering data preparing analyses and coordinating input from AE teams on return objectives risk budgets and investment priorities.
  • Support engagement with AEs key partners Office of the Chief Investment Officer Risk and Finance to ensure alignment and coordination.
  • Play a key role in AEs portfolio strategy initiatives such as department level portfolio reviews decision analysis etc.  

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Build trusted relationships across AE EPM Risk OCIO and Investment Operations.
  • Collaborate effectively with different colleagues sets and example of knowledge sharing
  • Uphold CPP Investments values of integrity partnership and high performance

Qualifications :

  • Undergraduate degree in Finance Economics Engineering Business Mathematics or related field. MBA/CFA/CAIA preferred.
  • 5-8 years with demonstrated track record in external manager selection and/or portfolio strategy.
  • Demonstrated strength in negotiating complex legal economic and data access terms balancing internal priorities and external dynamics to secure favorable outcomes under pressure
  • Excel & PowerPoint mastery; familiarity with quantitative methods including using SQL and Python for at scale data analysis.
  • Experience using GenAI tools including ChatGPT or comparable tools to enhance productivity and creativity.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills; ability to distill complex analysis into clear narratives for senior audiences.
