Job Description: Teacher Assistant
NATURE OF WORK
An employee in this class provides support to the teacher in the instruction of students. In some cases assistants may work one-on-one with special needs students in which cases such assistants may be required to possess additional skills and training in providing for the specific needs of such students. A wide variety of tasks are performed to support the teacher in the teaching-learning process for students. The work is performed under the supervision of the teacher and principal.
EXPECTATIONS
Academic Assistance
- Discuss assigned duties with classroom teachers in order to coordinate instructional efforts.
- Provide small group reinforcement instruction as prescribed by the teacher.
- Tutor and assist children individually or in small groups to help students master assignments and to reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers as requested.
- Monitor and complete behavior plans documentation as requested by the IEP team
- Redirect and use de-escalation techniques following student safety plans to ensure students safety and following academic and behavioral expectations set for the students based on IEP goals and accommodations.
- Collaborates with the teacher to report academic and behavioral progress as requested.
- Participate in teacher-parent conferences regarding students progress or concerns as requested.
- Provide extra assistance to students with special needs.
Instructional Preparation/Support
- Carry out specific behavior modification and personal development programs under the supervision of special education instructors psychologists or speech-language pathologists.
- Serves as requested when students with special needs are not in need of additional guidance and support. This could be facilitating a small support class covering classrooms as requested providing accommodations and alternative settings for students or administrative assistance duties as assigned.
- Serves as a proctor during testing.
- Attends staff meetings IEP meetings and workshops as requested.
Monitoring Student Behavior
- Supervise assigned students in classrooms halls playgrounds and gymnasiums or on field trips.
- Reconciles minor student conflicts.
- Reports discipline problems to teacher or principal.
- Enforce administration policies and rules governing students.
- Assist in bus loading and carpool duties as assigned.
REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Graduation from high school.
- Associates Degree
- Extensive training in de-escalation strategies proper restrain techniques and willingness to engage in additional training to ensure students safety
- Possession of an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge skills and abilities for the position
