Job Description

Overview

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) is seeking an Assistant Vice President for the Economic Competitiveness Division to lead efforts for improving state and local policy factors that enable economic growth and job creation in Virginia. The Economic Competitiveness Division is responsible for identifying economic growth opportunities for the Commonwealth and crafting budget and policy proposals to enhance Virginias competitiveness for those opportunities. The Assistant Vice President has primary responsibility for conducting research and analysis on Virginias competitiveness to identify opportunities for improvement developing and implementing the Strategic Plan for Economic Development of the Commonwealth and VEDPs annual Operational Plan supporting strategy development for VEDPs sector teams and supporting special projects including transformational economic development projects and requests from the General Assembly or the Administration.

Responsibilities:

Division management and development

  • Provide leadership through employee engagement mentorship timely feedback and direct management of team members professional development in problem-solving analysis and communication
  • Manage the hiring and onboarding of new team members

Leadership and management of projects and initiatives

  • Lead and manage complex high-profile projects and workstreams across the division
  • Serve as a thought partner to the Vice President and senior leadership on key initiatives
  • Coordinate cross-divisional and external partner engagement to ensure timely project execution
  • Provide direct support to Business Development teams to evaluate and improve Virginias competitiveness in core sectors
  • Lead or support transformational initiatives General Assembly or Executive Directive requests and other special projects
  • Provide strategic research support to external stakeholders including regional economic development organizations

Opportunity identification and solutions development

  • Lead analysis of Virginias economic competitiveness across core areas (e.g. talent sites business climate)
  • Evaluate business climate rankings and develop strategic recommendations
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to design and implement long-term solutions

Strategic and operational planning

  • Lead in developing VEDPs operational plan (updated each year) and developing and executing the strategic plan (developed every five years updated every two years)
  • Conduct research and analysis to inform plan development
  • Implement key initiatives in partnership with internal and external stakeholders

Skills:

  • Detailed analytical and quantitative problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent relationship development and stakeholder management skills
  • Excellent strategic analysis and creative problem-solving skills
  • Excellent computer proficiency particularly with spreadsheet (Excel) and presentation (PowerPoint) development
  • Project leadership and management working within external/internal cross-functional teams
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multitask
  • Ability to work under time pressure

Experience:

  • At least five years of relevant experience in positions of progressive responsibility
  • Two to four years of experience working in economic development strategic or public policy projects for a similar agency or firm or working at a top-tier professional services firm (e.g. strategy consulting or investment banking)
