Personal Appearance and Conduct
Personal appearance must always be one of neatness and appropriate dress. Please wear shoes and refrain from wearing clothing that advertise alcohol drugs profanity other schools etc. Pajamas are not considered appropriate dress.
Courtesy is expected when greeting individuals both in person and on the phone.
Use appropriate language (body language included).
All desk workers are expected to abide by all hall and university policies.
General Desk Policies
You must be on time for all shifts and meetings.
If you are of legal drinking age you must not consume alcohol within 12 hours of your shift
Residents are not allowed to be behind the front desk. It is University policy that there are no non-desk staff behind the front desk.
You may not take mail out of ANY mailbox from the front desk area not even your own. This is a FEDERAL OFFENSE.
No mail is to be given out from the front desk! This too is a FEDERAL OFFENSE. The resident needs their key to get their mail directly through their mailbox. All students must present ID and sign for packages.
NEVER give out a residents room number to anyone except a hall staff member.
Misuse of keys or keycards may result in termination of your employment.
Additional expectations will be explained by your HD.
Compensation
Starting pay is $8.05 and may increase with longevity. Written and verbal assessments will be used in evaluating job performance. If you do not fulfill responsibilities as outlined in this contract and in your HDs expectations your contract may be terminated.
Policies and Behavior
A Desk Receptionist who is allegedly involved in a violation of university policies will be referred to the Dean of Student Office. If the Desk Receptionist is found responsible for violating university policies that persons employment status will be subject to review by the RHD and Housing and Residence Life staff. Representing the hall or Housing and Residence Life department in a negative manner may jeopardize your position. This includes your conduct as a resident if applicable. Termination of your employment contract does not automatically terminate your Housing and Residence Life and Dining Services contracts.
Housing and Residence Life Centralized Expectations
We ask all our student leaders to follow general guidelines and expectations when agreeing to be part of the Housing and Residence Life team. These are not intended to change or alter your values or to tamper with your freedom of individuality but to fulfill your agreement with us to help us achieve our above-stated goals.
Some of these expectations include but are not limited to:
Following the same expectations and policies we have for all residents in the hall. This ranges from following state laws policies within the university handbook and the Housing and Residence Life Handbook to policies within your specific hall.
Respect individual differences of the residents in your hall and your peers.
Role model positive behaviors while working the desk and outside of your shift.
Be honest and open about mistakes.
Should there be occasions where it is felt you are not following the expectations of the department or your Hall Director you will be confronted and there may be future consequences to your position. If you are uncertain of the meaning of what is stated above please ask.
Confidentiality and Access Policies
To ensure a sense of safety and security to our residents and to be accurate on key inventories Housing and Residence Life has established the following guidelines for student staff members use of keys:
A student staff member can expect to receive one key to their room/mailbox and a staff ID. These keys should always remain in the possession of the student staff member.
Residents including staff should be in possession only of the keys and student ID assigned to them.
Student staff members should not give a key or staff ID to their room to anyone.
A student staff member should follow protocol as indicated in the Lockout policy when checking out keys and temporary ID cards.
Student staff members in possession of a key with the intent of performing a staff responsibility should return the key immediately following the completion of the task to the designated key tender location. These keys are never to leave the building.
Should a student staff member lose their room key or staff ID this should be reported to the Hall Director immediately for security reasons. The replacement cost for a lost key is $50 and for a staff ID is determined by IT.
Unauthorized use of keys or staff IDs may result in loss of employment and referral to the Dean of Students.

To ensure the safety and security of our residents the following must be followed regarding confidentiality and access:
Student staff must abide by the Housing and Residence Life expectations of appropriate use of StarRez and other software and file access.
Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the RHD to help meet the needs of your hall. These responsibilities constitute part of your employment agreement.
Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act to include completion of required training and reporting of all crimes to the university.
As an employee of the university report witnessed or otherwise reported incidents of sexual assault to the Office of the Dean of Students (36.11(22)(c)))
Uphold FERPA (Family Education Rights and Privacy Act) and protect confidential information of students and their support systems.
Serve as a Responsible Employee as defined by Title IX and UWSP Policy 14.2 to report thorough and complete information about sexual harassment sexual assault dating violence domestic violence stalking and other gender-based discrimination.
Successful background checks are required for the role for Criminal Background Checks and the Misconduct Referenced Check. This is a POT position.
