Job Description Summary:

FACILITIES MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST - AQUATICS
The Facilities Maintenance Specialist - Aquatics position operates under limited supervision within Facilities Maintenance. This role leverages the Facilities Maintenance Specialist expertise in pool equipment and systems to ensure reliable and functional performance of city aquatic systems. This position is responsible for coordinating and performing maintenance functions at Department of Parks and Recreation facilities which include recreation centers and indoor/outdoor aquatic facilities. This position uses advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills for fixing aquatic maintenance issues. This position uses technology and analytics to build out a predictive maintenance program continuously commissioning aquatic systems for equipment reliability and energy-efficient operation.

Job Description:

FACILITIES MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST (AQUATICS)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides specialist level knowledge to coordinateand perform maintenance functions for all aquatic facilities including East North and South Boulder Recreation Center indoor pools and Scott Carpenter and Spruce outdoor pools.

  • Performs maintenance functions on filtration and disinfectant systems; and various equipment including pumps heaters and other mechanical and plumbing systems.

  • Maintains appropriate levels of caustic and non-caustic chemicals in accordance with the State of Colorado Department of Public Healths guidelines and standards.

  • Maintains operations in accordance with the State of Colorado Department of Public Healths guidelines and standards.

  • Performs the daily water testing procedures at each Aquatic facility site to ensure adjustments to chemicals are appropriate.

  • Collaborate and work with the Facilities/Aquatics work teams to prepare each outdoor aquatic facility for season opening as well as preparing for closing and winterization.

  • Coordinates and implements maintenance schedules with Parks & Recreation for each site to ensure facility cleanliness. This includes detailed schedules for each pool and deck area; staff rooms; hot tubs; steam rooms; saunas; locker rooms; and all other aquatics-related areas.

  • Collaborates with Parks & Recreations Aquatics staff on annual maintenance shutdowns of each indoor aquatic facility

  • Collaborate with Parks & Recreation Aquatics staff to maintain and repair pool equipment.

  • Train and mentor new hires peers customers. This position makes the people around them better.

  • Manage small construction projects including the bid process.

Coordinates ongoing training and education for Aquatics Staff Pool Managers Facilities Staff and others as assigned. Training and education activities included but not limited to:

  • Basic to advanced understanding of pump room functions equipment and operations.

  • Basic to advanced understanding of water chemistry.

  • Safe chemical handling.

  • Troubleshooting protocols.

  • Maintaining training records.

Assists in ensuring that all aquatic facilities are safe for public access including but not limited to:

  • Training and education of staff regarding chemical spills hazardous waste dangers water quality control and filter room trouble shooting.

  • Inspects and properly cares for all pool equipment.

  • Participate in facility walkthroughs with the Citys Risk Manager and/or Aquatics and Facility Management staff to ensure that dangerous conditions are identified and satisfactorily addressed.

  • Assists in the coordination of emergency action plans pertaining to pump room operations and chemicals. May assist in implementation of emergency action plans for public areas of aquatic facilities or public areas adjacent to aquatic areas.

Performs administrative tasks including but not limited to:

  • Orders and maintains inventory for all pool chemicals equipment and supplies.

  • Keeps pool chemical and maintenance logs.

  • Manages chemical and various maintenance supply and equipment vendor contracts.

  • Updates job knowledge to remain current with aquatic and facilities trends maintenance trends and techniques.

Other:

  • Promotes a culture of teamwork and synergy through collaboration and communication both within the department and with other governmental agencies.

  • Generate creative and innovative solutions to manage organizational issues and opportunities.

  • Maintains and promotes professional ethics (i.e. honesty integrity respect fairness caring) in all conduct. Take proper safety precautions anticipate unsafe circumstances and act accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self others materials and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations policies and procedures. Report all accidents and damage to City property. Responds quickly and effectively to rapidly changing environmental conditions.

  • Responsible for knowing and complying with all City and department policies; participating in professional training and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies.

  • Performs related duties as required by management to meet the needs of the City of Boulder.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to communicate professionally courteously and effectively verbally and in writing with other staff members the public and event promoters in stressful situations.

  • Ability to be self-directed individual with ability to lead a team with minimum supervision.

  • Ability to demonstrate experience using personal computers and software.

  • Ability to ensure all practical safety measures are observed and ability to utilize all required safety equipment.

  • Knowledge of Model Aquatic Health Code and industry safety standards; basic electrical plumbing pump and motor knowledge; equipment repair experience; and construction experience.

  • Skills in organization and collaboration.

  • Valid Drivers License and ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.

  • Have a maintain acceptable background information including criminal conviction history.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to demonstrate skills in analyzing complex aquatic systems or processes and work with management to implement improvements.

  • Ability to communicate bilingually in Spanish and English

  • Skills at an advanced level in critical thinking and problem-solving to diagnose and repair complex aquatic systems.

  • Construction Facilities Recreation Administration Management or related degree.

  • Prior Lead and training experience.

  • Experience with managing contractors including the bid process.

  • Experience with start-up and winterizations of outdoor pools.

  • Experience with recreation facilities operated by a municipality or recreation district.

  • CPO/AFO Training or other aquatic training Certification

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma or GED

  • 7-8 years in maintaining aquatics facilities or an associates degree in a related field and 3-4 years of related experience.

  • Have a current Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatics Facilities Operator (AFO) certification.

Supervision Received: Facilities Maintenance Manager

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical and mental effort: Ability to work in and around equipment in areas of limited access and confined spaces requiring vision hearing standing bending walking and kneeling. Upper body strength to lift and carry materials up to 50 pounds as needed. Ability to use all required safety proper safety precautions to prevent for the safety of self others materials and equipment. Use all required safety equipment and follow all safety regulations policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.

  • Work environment: Willingness and ability to work alternate shift schedules irregular hours extended shift hours weekends evenings holidays stand-by rotation and/or emergencies as required. This will have responsibilities across both indoor and outdoor facilities performing routine maintenance and troubleshooting at recreation centers swimming pools and other municipal buildings. Work is conducted in a variety of settings including pool areas mechanical rooms and outdoor spaces and may involve exposure to heat humidity water cleaning chemicals and varying weather conditions.

  • Machines and equipment used: Water testing equipment chemical feed systems pool filtration systems pool circulation pumps heaters and boilers vacuum systems power tools hand tools lifts and ladders HVAC controls SCBA and PPE.
