Job Description

Our client is looking for a Charge Sister to ensure the smooth operation and delivery of professional and ethical quality patient care.
Salary and Benefits:

Key Responsibilities:
Quality Patient Care:
  • Responsible for all clinical and non - clinical activities of the unit
  • Manage all nursing and ancillary staffing in the unit of responsibility to ensure quality nursing care.
  • Acts as a patient advocate ensuring patient needs are met and their rights are protected.
  • Monitors and assesses patient progress to treatment.
  • Facilitates clear communication between the healthcare team patients and their families.
  • Checks and ensures doctors orders are carried out on time and drug administration is done according to protocol.
  • Conducts frequent ward rounds assures staff are implementing care plans delivering care appropriately and recognizes changes in patient status ensures change in patient status is communicated to physicians and escalation of care is rendered as needed.
  • Promotes a culture of patient safety identifying and mitigating risks to ensure good clinical outcomes
  • Conducts proper assessment of patients placements and institute correct isolation of patients
  • Provides guidance and support to nurses to ensure best practices are followed and promotes a high standard of individualized patient care.
  • Emphasizes communication of patients admission progress and results to the respective doctors timeously and correctly
  • Communicates with finance department of any changes to level of care and discharges of patients
  • Monitors and evaluates the quality of care provided by conducting audits using the PDSA methodology identifies areas of improvement clinical effectiveness and implements changes to enhance patient outcomes.
  • Enforces proper patient documentation that stands for legal scrutiny.
  • Ensures dangerous drugs protocols are maintained.
  • Ensures awareness compliance adherence to nursing policies SOPs Code of Conduct and other relevant acts to improve nursing standards.
  • Socialises staff to new policies and SOPs.
  • Attends to resuscitation and debriefing in the ward.
People Management:
  • Overseeing the work of nurses and other healthcare professionals including scheduling performance management and addressing any issues of concerns.
  • Foster an inter-disciplinary approach to care delivery and guide the team towards organisational goals.
  • Ensure all new nursing support and administrative staff in the department receive an adequate induction / re-induction programme have a clear understanding of their duties responsibilities and standards of performance at all times
  • Drafts staff duties and allocates resources in the ward according to patient acuity.
  • Disciplines unit staff and enforce the Code of Conduct.
  • Participates in conflict resolution and change management
  • Facilitates nurses training education and development
  • Manages conflicts and change Management.
  • Conducts staff appraisals.
Operational Management:
  • Ensuring the smooth and efficient functioning of the ward including managing resources equipment and supplies.
  • Monitors and evaluates the quality of care provided identifying areas of improvement and implementing changes to enhance patient outcomes.
  • Facilitates personal and professional staff development staff updating CPD points and ensuring they have registered with the Nurses Council yearly.
  • Inspects and assesses adherence to infection control practices including hand hygiene and proper waste management.
  • Investigates incidents tracks stakeholders complaints and initiates gaps mitigation
  • Keeps up to date with evolving policies and procedures and current research findings.
  • Participates in hospital cover and weekend calls.
  • Monitors equipment maintenance usage and care.
  • Maintains equipment inventory and identifies equipment needed in the unit.
  • Manages staff attendance and always ensures unit coverage
  • Manages the staff leave sick leave and present absenteeism
  • Allocates staff based on workload level of competence to ensure optimal staff usage.
  • Delegates decision making authority tasks and responsibilities to appropriate person to maximize organization and employee effectiveness.
  • Compiles monthly reports
Key Skills:

  • Ability to prioritize tasks multitasking able to work under pressure.
Key Qualifications:
  • 5 O Levels including Mathematics and Science.
  • Registered General Diploma/Nursing Degree.
  • Post basic qualifications in any area of specialty.
  • 2 years after post-basic qualification.
