The Centre for Governance Ethics and Compliance at Stellenbosch University (SU) consists of the Institutional Secretariat and Publications SU Archives Compliance Office and Office for Business Ethics.

The Centre is also responsible for general governance of Statutory Bodies. The Centre reports to the Registrar.

Purpose of the Office for Business Ethics

The Business Ethics Officer will be responsible for the establishment and further development of the Office for Business Ethics Office is the first point of call in all ethics matters that are not research Business Ethics Officer must provide advice and guidance to internal stakeholders.

The main purpose of the Office is to expand the existing ethical culture and to enable internal stakeholders to place ethics at the top of their minds when decisions need to be made.

Die Sentrum vir Oorsigbestuur Etiek en Wetlike Nakoming by die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) bestaan uit die Institusionele Sekretariaat en Publikasies US Argiewe Wetlike nakoming en Kantoor vir Besigheidsetiek.

Die Sentrum is ook verantwoordelik vir die algemene oorsigbestuur van statutre liggame. Die Sentrum rapporteer aan die Registrateur.

Doel van die Kantoor vir Besigheidsetiek

Die Besigheidsetiekbeampte sal verantwoordelik wees vir die vestiging en verdere ontwikkeling van die Kantoor vir Besigheidsetiek. Hierdie Kantoor is die eerste punt in alle etiekverwante sake wat nie met navorsing verband hou Besigheidsetiekbeampte moet advies en leiding aan interne belanghebbendes verskaf.

Die hoofdoel van die Kantoor is om die bestaande etiese kultuur uit te brei en interne belanghebbendes in staat te stel om etiek n prioriteit te maak wanneer besluite geneem moet word.

Duties/Pligte

  • Establishing and further developing the Ethics Office.
  • Developing SUs ethics statement and ensuring that the Rectorates leadership commitment is published annually.
  • Responsible for the establishment of the Operational Ethics Committee in consultation with the Deputy Registrar. The Business Ethics Officer will act as secretariat for this committee as well as
for the Social and Business Ethics Committee.
  • Conducting Ethics Risk Assessments across the institution as a whole.
  • Developing an ethics strategy for the approval by the Rectorate various committees and Council.
  • Internally reviewing all ethicsrelated policies to ensure that they are aligned with the SU ethics strategy.
  • Assisting with the review and implementation of the code of ethics (Code 2040).
  • Developing and implementing ethical decisionmaking training how to deal with ethical dilemmas how to avoid and/or manage conflicts of interest and enablingmanagers to train the team
members reporting to them.
  • Developing and maintaining confidential mechanisms for the handling and processing of complaints and allegations related to ethics or conflicts.
  • Promptly investigating complaints and allegations of ethical wrongdoing or conflicts of interest. Preparing written investigative reports as necessary.
  • Preparing quarterly reports for management the Social and Business Ethics Committee the Audit and Risk Committee (relating to ethics risks) and annual reports to Council.
  • Other related responsibilities.

  • Vestiging en verdere ontwikkeling van die Kantoor vir Besigheidsetiek.
  • Ontwikkel die US se etiekstelling en verseker dat die Rektoraat se ondeskrywing jaarliks gepubliseer word.
  • Verantwoordelik vir die vestiging van die operasionele Besigheidsetiekkomitee in oorleg met die Adjunkregistrateur. Die as sekretariaat vir hierdie komitee sowel as
vir die Sosiale en Besigheidsetiekkomitee optree.
  • Bied etiekrisikobepalings regdeur die instelling aan.
  • Ontwikkel n etiesestrategie vir goedkeuring deur die Rektoraat verskeie komitees en die Raad.
  • Hersien alle interne etiekverwante beleide om te verseker dat dit in lyn is met die US seetiesestrategie.
  • Hulpverlening met die hersiening en implementering van die etiese kode (Kode 2040).
  • Ontwikkeling en implementering van opleiding in etiese besluitneming hoe om etiese dilemmas te hanteer hoe om konflik van belange te vermy en/of te bestuur en stel bestuurders in staat om
die spanlede wat aan hulle raporteer op te lei.
  • Ontwikkel en uitbouing van vertroulike meganismes vir die hantering en verwerking van klagtes en bewerings wat verband hou met etiek of konflik van belang.
  • Die spoedige ondersoek van klagtes en bewerings van etiese oortredings of konflikte van belange. Berei skriftelike ondersoekverslae voor indien nodig.
  • Voorbereiding van kwartaallikse verslae vir die Rekotraat Sosiale en besigheidsetiekkomitee Oudit en Risikokomitee (met betrekking tot etiekrisikos) en jaarverslae vir die Raad.
  • Ander verwante verantwoordelikhede.

Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

  • Bachelors degree (or NQF 7 equivalent) in a related field.
  • Certified Ethics Officer (with accreditation from The Ethics Institute)
  • At least five years experience in the field of ethics.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build strategic relationships and partnerships.
  • A high level of written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to comprehend interpret and apply an ethical lens to situations faced by the University.
  • Must be an ethical person with high ethical standards and integrity.
  • Detailorientated with excellent judgement critical thinking decisionmaking and problemsolving skills.
  • The ability to effectively work in a highpressured and fastmoving environment with a high premium on clientfocused support.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive situations with solid judgement and discretion.
  • The ability to liaise proactively with internal and external clients and to add value.
  • The ability to work independently within a team context in the interests of the greater institution.
  • Experience in facilitating ethics workshops and/or training.

  • Baccalaureusgraad (of geklykwaardig aan n NKR 7) in n verwante vakgebied.
  • Gesertifiseerde Etiekbeampte (met akkreditasie van Die Etiekinstituut).
  • Minstens vyf jaar se ervaring in die etiek.
  • Uitstekende interpersoonlike vaardighede met n bewese vermo om strategiese verhoudings en vennootskappe te bou.
  • n Ho vlak van skriftelike en mondelinge kommunikasievaardighede.
  • Die vermo om n etiese lens te begryp te interpreteer en toe te pas op situasies wat deur die Universiteit ervaar word.
  • Moet n etiese persoon wees met ho etiese standaarde en integriteit.
  • Detailgeorinteerd met uitstekende oordeel kritiese denke besluitnemings en probleemoplossingsvaardighede.
  • Die vermo om effektief in n hodruk en vinnigbewegende omgewing te werk met n ho prioriteit op klintgefokusde ondersteuning.
  • Die vermo om vertroulikheid te handhaaf en sensitiewe situasies met sterk oordeel en diskresie te hanteer.
  • Die vermo om proaktief met interne en eksterne klinte te kommunikeer en waarde toe te voeg.
  • Vermo om onafhanklik en binne n spanverband te werk in belang van die groter instelling.
  • Ervaring in die fasilitering van etiekwerksessies en/of opleiding.

Recommendation/Aanbeveling

  • Experience in setting up a new business ethics function and to establish a new office.
  • Higher education sector experience.
  • Postgraduate qualification.
  • Knowledge of King Codes.
  • Exposure to ethics committees.
