Job Description
The South African Sugarcane Research Institute a division of the South African Sugar Association is seeking a highly skilled Research Specialist: Geo-Spatial Science and Technologies based in Mount Edgecombe.
The ideal candidate will apply expertise in geo-spatial technologies to support research technology development and knowledge exchange that enhances service delivery to sugarcane growers. This role offers an exciting opportunity to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and contribute to cutting-edge advancements in digital agriculture. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the institute extensive collaboration with experts in a number of agricultural and biological sciences to solve complex agricultural challenges is required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct research and develop technologies in geo-spatial sciences GIS remote sensing and digital agriculture
- Assist in building and refining mathematical models and algorithms for spatially explicit crop improvement protection and management research
- Collaborate with scientists and agricultural engineers to enhance geo-spatial research and service capabilities
- Stay abreast of the latest geo-spatial and remote sensing advancements and engage with industry stakeholders to identify research needs
- Lead and contribute to projects focused on digital agriculture and precision farming
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of foundational spatial datasets for use in research
- Analyze and interpret research data for scientific publications industry reports and stakeholder presentations
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of spatial datasets for use in research
- Provide expert advice and respond to industry requests on geo-spatial technologies
- Manage geo-spatial software infrastructure and project budgets
Minimum Requirements:
Education and Experience:
- MSc in Geography (GIS and Remote Sensing) or a related field
- Minimum of three years of experience in GIS remote sensing or digital agriculture applications
- Strong expertise in spatial data analysis mapping technologies and algorithm development
- Experience working in agriculture environmental science or a related field is advantageous
- Proficiency in GIS and remote sensing software such as ArcGIS QGIS Google Earth Engine or similar platforms
- Strong data management analytical and programming skills (e.g. Python R or MATLAB)
- Ability to communicate and network with others
- A valid drivers license (Code 08) and willingness to travel as needed
