Job Description

Position Function:

The College of Veterinary Medicine Mississippi State University invites applications for a clinical track assistant/associate/full professor position in Large Animal Ambulatory Services for farm animals and horses. This position is housed in the Department of Pathobiology and Population Medicine.

Area of Specialization:

Large Animal Ambulatory

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include teaching in the professional program and participation in the Ambulatory service. It is expected that this position will have an approximate time allocation of 32-36 weeks per year (65-75%) of ambulatory service composed principally of cattle horses and small ruminants. This position is expected to participate in service to regional livestock auction markets. Additionally this position includes shared emergency duty for the ambulatory service (farm animals and horses). Ambulatory faculty also provide support for regional and state agricultural events such as the Mississippi State Fair. A 5% FTE allocation will be for academic service (e.g. committees taskforces and student interviews) and the remaining time will be available for didactic teaching or collaborative scholarship. A Faculty Mentoring Program is available to all new faculty.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for teaching and clinical service and will be comfortable working with all large animal species. The present Ambulatory caseload consists of 40% cattle (mostly beef) 40% horses and 20% small ruminants and it is hoped that the person selected for this position will expand the services offered and the caseload. While research is not a required element this position is expected to participate in collaborative scholarship.

A new farm animal hospital and outpatient cattle handling facility are under construction and these new facilities will enhance animal flow and allow outpatient and inpatient services to be conducted simultaneously. They also serve as a base for the Center for Rural Veterinary Practice which has been established at the MSU CVM to recruit youth into veterinary medicine promote rural practice in the veterinary curriculum and support graduate veterinarians practicing in rural areas.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications include a DVM or equivalent. Prior private practice or teaching hospital experience is preferred. Applicants are not required to have board eligibility/certification in an AVMA-approved specialty or to have a graduate degree beyond the DVM but these qualifications will be considered additional assets. This position will work with nine faculty on the Farm Animal Theriogenology and Ambulatory and Food Animal services so demonstrated collegiality and teamwork are required. Excellent individual and group communication skills are required. The ability to do sustained physical activity associated with large animal practice is required as is a valid drivers license. The ability to attain a regular veterinary license in Mississippi is required as well as maintenance of Category 2 veterinary accreditation.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Excellent telephone and email communication skills especially related to client service.
Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors staff and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Job frequently requires walking sitting reaching talking hearing handling objects with hands. Job requires standing stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling and lifting up to 50 pounds.
