Job Summary
The Animal Processing Supervisor is responsible for directly supervising and supporting staff while ensuring the delivery of high-quality intake services including thorough examinations and timely vaccinations. This role oversees the efficient and timely processing of animals monitors workflow in all animal processing areas and assists with training and guiding new staff and volunteers. The Animal Processing Supervisor fosters an environment of compassionate respectful care for both animals and people in alignment with HSPPRs mission values goals and management philosophy.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Animal Care Operations
- Supervises all aspects of animal processing ensuring high standards in animal handling intake procedures sanitation and staff performance in accordance with established protocols.
- Ensures the animal care department operates in a coordinated efficient and effective manner including but not limited to intake and follow-up exams vaccine boosters and health and weight checks.
- Serves as the Euthanasia Lead performing humane euthanasia when necessary as well as ensuring proper care and disposal of deceased animals.
- Develops maintains and updates training manuals procedures checklists and reference materials.
- Assists with onboarding and ongoing training for staff and volunteers.
- Creates and manages staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage and efficient workflow in all work areas.
- Provides floor supervision offering guidance constructive feedback and additional training as needed.
- Performs all Animal Processing job duties as necessary to support operations.
Relationships
- Anticipates and works to resolve conflict while promoting open communication among volunteers staff and management. Actively solicits input from employees and volunteers regarding their work and workplace.
- Supports staff and volunteers by fostering a positive respectful environment and delivering quality service to clients volunteers and employees recognizing and valuing their individual contributions to the organizations success.
Communication
- Acts as a liaison to volunteers by providing feedback answering frequently asked questions offering problem-solving support and addressing animal behavior concerns in accordance with current procedures.
- Communicates effectively with staff and volunteers to ensure all pertinent parties are informed of animal processing updates issues and relevant information.
- Documents staff and volunteer complaints addressing concerns with professionalism discretion and sound judgment and involving the Admissions Manager as needed.
Customer Service
- Keeps the Admissions Manager informed of developments that may affect HSPPR or the department including department progress media exposure public image client concerns and personnel issues.
- Supports staff and volunteers by providing quality service to clients volunteers and employees and by recognizing their individual contributions to the organizations success.
Fiscal Responsibility
- Assists with ordering maintenance and inventory management of supplies and equipment.
- Plans and organizes resources in anticipation of future departmental needs.
Performance Management and Supervision
- Recruits trains coordinates motivates evaluates and recognizes staff to ensure high performance and engagement.
Other
- Demonstrates commitment to the mission values goals and success of HSPPR.
- Accurately documents observed animal behaviors using objective language in accordance with relevant procedures and policies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands
- All physical demands of Animal Processor position.
- Must regularly lift 50 or more pounds of static or moving weight.
- Required to climb or balance stoop kneel crouch crawl and smell.
- Regularly required to sit reach with hands and arms talk hear and is frequently required to stand and walk. May be expected to be on feet for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to use both hands and arms to grip pull and push utilizing safety equipment such as but not limited to catch poles snappy snares leashes ropes muzzles.
- Consistently exposed to animals in the workplace and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision and depth perception.
- Must handle various animals of various sizes including aggressive animals.
- Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases.
- Regularly exposed to noise and potential exposure to hazardous weather conditions.
- Potential exposure to cleaning supplies and/or other substances containing toxic or caustic chemicals.
Schedule Requirements
- Sunday - Thursday. Schedule may vary to include evenings weekends and holidays.
Education/Experience Necessary
- Minimum of 2 years of professional experience working with animals in an animal welfare zoological organization or other animal care field desired
- Certified to euthanize at HSPPR required; if not currently certified must become fully trained and certified with 60 days of start date
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Supervisory experience desired
- Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail
- Ability to utilize effective problem solving and decision-making skills
- Knowledge of veterinary care/animal health desired
