What you will be doing


The Rolls-Royce Submarines business designs manufactures and supports the nuclear propulsion plants that power all classes of Royal Navy Submarines. The business has been carrying out this role for over sixty years and is unique in the UK as being the only place that is actively designing and manufacturing nuclear reactor plants. Work has now started on defining and delivering the strategy to enable the UK to provide cores fuel and the associated technology for the NPPX plant.

NPPX represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to help deliver the nuclear propulsion plants to meet the requirements of a future UK Navy. Ensuring that the core technology programmes are aligned to these future requirements is vital. A future core and fuel strategy has been initially defined but now needs to be addition this strategy will have to take account of developing customer requirements.

These diverse technical challenges mean we are seeking an Assistant Chief Engineer to provide the technical leadership and governance for the future cores and technology scope of work.

Responsibilities

We are seeking an individual who has proven experience of the design and substantiation of UK naval reactor cores and the delivery of technology development programmes. You will have an understanding of the technical and safety governance processes used in the Submarines Enterprise and be capable of operating across multiple business units and international boundaries. You will have led teams of engineers in the past and be able to demonstrate an ability to drive complex technical programmes of work to completion.

In this role you will:

  • Be accountable to the Core Chief Engineer and own the appropriate engineering scope of work (Future Cores and Technology) associated with the provision substantiation and through-life support of reactor cores.
  • Act as the intelligent customer for the core chief engineering team for the relevant scope of work and have delegated accountability for the approval of all technical outputs associated with this scope of work.
  • Provide the technical direction and leadership required to ensure that all core technology programmes are aligned to the current and future needs of the plant.
  • Help define the technical governance strategy for the delivery and support of reactor cores and be accountable for its implementation.
  • Work closely with the new facilities team to ensure product requirements are accounted for early in the design phase.
  • Work closely with the UK MoD to ensure adequate assurance is undertaken for the future reactor cores.
  • Act as an escalation route for all engineering matters relating to the relevant core product balancing off the cost quality and delivery requirements of the programme.
  • Support decision making in the programme teams by providing clear engineering recommendations.
  • Support Product Safety Boards as appropriate at Product Business and Company levels.
  • Work with the Head of Reactor Engineering to ensure core programmes of work are prioritised resourced and delivered to meet their technical requirements.
  • Work with the Heads of Capability to help ensure the capability requirements for the core programmes are understood and planned for.
