You will be updated with latest job alerts via emailA Hazardous Materials Technician (HazMat Tech) is a certified professional trained to perform technician-level duties in alignment with national standards and the regulations of the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. This role involves handling identifying managing and coordinating the disposal of hazardous materials and explosives to ensure compliance with safety protocols and minimize environmental impact. HazMat Techs also respond to hazardous material spills or emergencies working to mitigate risks to public health safety and the environment.

Perform as a member of an Incident Management Team during emergency or disaster situations.
Maintain situational awareness of all HCFMO activities.
Serve on committees boards or other teams as assigned by the Fire Marshal or designee.
Perform assigned tasks safely and report initial accidents injuries or health exposures in accordance with accepted safety practices and HCFMO policy.

Education:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent from an accredited educational institution
Certification and Licensure:
Be eligible to be certified by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Basic Structure Fire Suppression and Hazardous Materials HazMat Technician.
Texas DPS Class B Exempt Drivers License.
TCOLE Candidates ONLY:
If TCOLE:
At the time of appointment be eligible to be commissioned by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) as a Peace Officer
Pass a TCOLE and general criminal background check to include L2 L3
Pass a TCOLE-certified weapons qualification.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge in detecting identifying handling and decontamination of hazardous materials; ability to effectively mitigate hazardous material incidents through offensive operations.
Knowledge on Structural Firefightinga working knowledge of recognized laws and standards for hazardous material response structural firefighting fire inspections fire investigations fireworks fire and life safety hazards including LGC. 352.016; OSHA 29CFR1910.120; OSHA 29CFR1910.134; OSHA 29CFR1910.146; OSHA 29CFR1910.156; and but not limited to USEPA40CFR311.
Knowledge of general first and medical aid and rescue.
National Standards in accordance with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection NFPA 470 OSHA and USEPA.
Knowledge of Incident Management such as the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
Must pass an annual required hazardous materials physical accordingly to NFPA 1582.
Knowledge in various areas relevant to the HCFMO.

Current TCFP Regulated Hazardous Materials Response Team Member ORan eligible previous Harris County Hazardous Materials Response Team Member.
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:
Regular Part-time
Monday - Sunday 24-Hour Service
(The normal workweek is 24 hours / 48 hours per pay period); however the job is subject to flex time after-hours night holiday and weekend work possibly without prior notice and may be requested to work overtimeand weekends for special program events.
Salary:
Based on 26 Pay Periods
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
Employment is contingent upon passing a background check and drug screen.
