This position will function as a Transportation Worker III in the Special Maintenance Operations Group (SMOG). Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance and construction tasks in the SMOG unit. This position includes the proficient operation of various heavy equipment that includes but is not limited to chip spreader asphalt distributor sweeper tandem and quad dump trucks skid steers motor grader and excavators. Workers will be expected to traverse steep and uneven terrain work in extreme temperature conditions perform manual labor for road maintenance duties and other assigned duties as required. Workers in this position will be expected to act upon both verbal and written communication to successfully complete assigned tasks. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible road maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance repair and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices operating a variety of hand and power tools clearing right of way performing preventive maintenance and repairs to pavements shoulder maintenance pipe installation or other drainage tasks inventorying and tracking quantities of used materials performing manual labor tasks and the operation of assigned heavy equipment. Work will involve lifting up to 80 lbs. repeatedly. Work also involves walking and standing for long periods of time shoveling raking and sweeping. The employee in this position will be expected to work in all types of weather conditions. This position is subject to emergency callback scheduled night work and out-of-town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

The ability to be able to operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Drivers License with Tanker (N) endorsement.Either possession of a current Commercial Drivers License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Drivers License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.Safety Toe shoes will be needed.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
