Job Description:


The Oncology Financial Navigator serves as a patient advocate liaison and educator to assist cancer patients with understanding and navigating the cost of their care and healthcare coverage. Some patients may experience financial vulnerability during their treatment. Brown Cancer Center financial navigators evaluate their level of exposure to the possibility of financial toxicity which can hinder patients treatment. This personalized approach to providing patients with knowledge and hopefully financial savings will add a level of comfort and improved health outcomes to an otherwise challenging moment.

Essential Functions:

Percent of Time
Meets with the patient during interdisciplinary introduction meetings to review patients insurance(s) coverage and potential out of pocket expenses. Assessment of patients financial healthcare and household needs. Identify financial barriers to access treatment.
Serves as a liaison for financial matters throughout treatment including follow up on insurance and financial risk assessment.
With a high level of initiative assesses the financial needs of patients establishes a positive supportive relationship assists in developing a plan of care and thoroughly documents the findings recommendations and interventions made.
Communicates and collaborates with the treatment team re the financial implications of medical intervention on both the patient and the health care collaboration with the ordering physician recommends financial options that best fit the patients medical and financial needs.
Interacts with Medicare insurance companies pharmaceutical companies and other assistance programs as an advocate for the patient.
Maintains strong working relationships with other members of the treatment team.
Participates in activities to enhance professional development
Able to perform these services throughout the continuum of care (outpatient inpatient and other various departments)
Participates in data collection for quality and research purposes.


Shift Requirements:
Shift Length (in hours): Full time 40 hrs per week
# Shifts/Week: 1st shift Days
Overtime Required: Infrequently Sometimes Often n/a (exempt position)

Other Functions:
Maintain compliance with all company policies procedures and standards of conduct.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Other Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Minimum: Effective communications skills ability to manage a variety of tasks and problems at the same time. High level of initiative and ability to self-direct to solve financial problems of patients; ability to work collaboratively with the treatment team. Have a good knowledge of programs available to assist patients with their financial needs.
Ability to handle stressful situations involving critically ill patients and other sensitive issues involving finances.
Preferred: In addition to the above skills have a thorough knowledge of Health insurance guidelines programs and plans; patient assistance programs co-pay assistance programs Medicaid Medicare health plans COBRA guidelines and Health Care Reform. Furthermore to have the ability to find new programs that could assist patients with their financial needs.

Additional Job Description:

Education:

  • Bachelors degree nursing psychology social work finance or other healthcare related field
  • Masters degree in nursing social work finance or other healthcare related field (preferred)

Experience:

  • Minimum Two (2) years in oncology or other applicable healthcare setting
  • Experience with Medicare health plans COBRA regulations Medicaid guidelines PAP and co-pay assistance programs (preferred).

Licensure:

  • Maintain licensure in applicable state if a Clinical Social Worker or Registered Nurse

Job Competency:

Knowledge Skills and Abilities critical to this role:

  • Knowledge of CPT HCPCS and ICD codes.
  • Completion of Financial Navigator Class as assigned within 6 months of hire.

Language Ability:

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats.
  • Bilingual (preferred)

Reasoning Ability:

  • Able to critically think through complex patient situations process improvements evidence-based practice.

Computer Skills:

  • Ability to work within multiple computer systems fluidly
  • Maintains knowledge of computer programs associated with the Cancer Center and system needed to perform tasks outside of the Brown Cancer Center (i.e. Cerner Epic OncoNav Aria insurance/grant related systems)
