Within walking distance of the state capitol it sits squarely in the heart of a vibrant college town. Featuring one of the best views on campus an art-filled bridge connects the historic Elvehjem building built in 1970 with the Chazen building built in 2011. With a permanent collection of more than 25000 objects from vessels of ancient Greece to prints by Kara Walker the Chazen is one of the largest museums in the state of Wisconsin. Two expansive buildings encompass 163000 square feet making it an integral cultural force within the Big Ten. More than 180000 visitors come through the Chazens doors each year to enjoy the permanent collection and special exhibitions. Admission is free for all and includes programs for students families and community members all provided with the museums unique brand of Wisconsin hospitality.
The Museum Guide actively supports community and public learning within the Chazens newly restructured Engagement division. Reporting to the Chief Engagement Officer and working as part of a cohort of educators that include both professional and student staff the Museum Guide develops and leads participatory tours of the Chazens special exhibitions and permanent collection galleries. The Museum Guide is responsible for leading and co-leading a mixture of K-12 fieldtrips University and community group visits and drop-in public tours of the museum. Additionally the Museum Guide will conceptualize research and execute new tour and arts activities. The Museum Guide will meaningfully participate in bi-weekly education team meetings and monthly Engagement division meetings. Overall the Museum Guide will strive to make all visitors and groups feel welcome and supported in their visit to the Chazen.
This is a limited term part-time position with a maximum duration of up to two years. Expected hours range from 8-15 hours per week. General availability Monday -Friday 10:00am -5:00pm; occasional weekends and evenings (exact schedule negotiable with candidate).
60% - With support from the Chazens education team develop lead and co-lead participatory group visits for all ages with methods and content that align with varying interests and learning goals. Ensures each group visit adheres to general museum visitor guidelines and educational best practices.
20% - Attend and contribute to regular meetings and trainings; proactively respond to scheduling requests from the Educator Coordinator.
20% - Research artworks on view as well as best practices for museum education.
