Job Description

The University of Michigan School of Dentistry invites applications for the Director of Community-Based Collaborative Care and Education (CBCE). This position manages the School of Dentistrys community-based external rotation experiences for the pre-doctoral program. The Director of CBCE represents the school at affiliated external clinical sites oversees the CBCE curriculum manages the Victors for Veterans programs and works with the clinic directors and preceptors at the affiliated sites to ensure quality and safe learning environments for our interns (students) and optimal care for the patients they serve at the sites.

Position Responsibilities: Under the general supervision of the Assistant Dean for CBCE the main duties of the Director include but are not limited to:

    • Regularly visit in-person or via Zoom with off-campus clinics across the state of Michigan to calibrate and review precepting of adjunct faculty and clinic operations.

    • Direct calibration of faculty preceptors at all sites to ensure that the clinical competency assessments are reliable and consistent with those being performed in the School of Dentistry clinics.

    • Evaluate the care provided at outreach sites using the accepted standard of criteria as delineated for the School of Dentistry.

    • Evaluate the learning environment based on evidence-based principles of adult learning theory and collaborate closely with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs on curriculum development and implementation.

    • Assess current and prospective sites preceptors and clinical care models using accepted rubrics defined for each.

    • Day-to-day operations of the CBCE program including serving as faculty course director for DENTand 857-001 (CBCE Departmental and Pathways courses and attendant responsibilities).

    • Assist the Assistant Dean for CBCE in planning budgeting organizational and administrative policy development and implementation.

    • Ensure appropriate compliance with university state and federal policies and procedures.

    • Facilitate the implementation of interprofessional care/education (IPC/IPE) in clinical environments.

    • Represent the CBCE program for the Assistant Dean for CBCE to internal and external audiences as needed including the Discipline Coordinators meeting.

    • Work with the Office of Patient Services and Dental Informatics to ensure that student assessment data in CBCE fully integrates with the student clinical assessment systems.

    • Selected candidates should be aware that responsibilities shown under job description are subject to change to reflect new goals identified because of program needs annual performance planning or changes in personnel budgetary or institutional needs.



The successful candidate will hold a DDS DMD or equivalent degree. Candidates must be a current full time (80% or more effort) clinical or tenure track faculty member at the School of Dentistry. Candidates must have a demonstrated track record of outstanding clinical teaching and administrative experience and articulate a clear vision for the future of the CBCE and Victors for Veterans programs and research in the School of Dentistry. Candidates should also be able to interact effectively with people from all backgrounds. Additional Qualifications include:

    • Flexibility to be available outside of usual business hours (8am-5pm) when necessary to address and mediate urgent concerns.

    • Experience with data management and analysis using various learning management software programs.

    • Ability to effectively manage administrative tasks and other priorities by leveraging strong organizational skills.

    • Excellent communication interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate and interact effectively with people.
