DescriptionThe Chief Building Engineer will oversee the day-to-day operations maintenance and repair of critical infrastructure within the data center ensuring 100% uptime and compliance with safety and operational standards. The ideal candidate will have either an electrical or mechanical background with in-depth experience in high-availability systems such as UPS switchgear breakers PDUs RPPs busways or experience in chiller plants pumps and mechanical systems critical to large-scale facility operations.
Responsibilities- Maintenance & Operations:
- Lead the operation maintenance and troubleshooting of critical electrical and mechanical systems including but not limited to:
- Electrical: UPS systems circuit breakers switchgear PDUs RPPs busway systems backup generators.
- Mechanical: Chiller plants cooling towers pumps HVAC systems air handlers and water treatment systems.
- Ensure all systems are running at optimal efficiency and meet the highest standards of uptime reliability.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) and corrective maintenance (CM) to ensure operational excellence.
- Team Leadership:
- Manage and mentor a team of technicians providing training and guidance to foster a high-performing team.
- Ensure team members are adhering to best practices for safety quality and performance.
- Oversee staffing schedules task assignments and ensure adequate coverages for all shifts.
- Troubleshooting & Problem Resolution:
- Lead troubleshooting efforts in the event of system failures or operational anomalies ensuring rapid restoration of service with minimal disruption.
- Develop and implement proactive solutions to mitigate downtime risks.
- Safety & Compliance:
- Ensure all building systems comply with local state and federal safety and environmental regulations.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and ensure adherence to safety protocols and emergency response procedures.
- Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of inspections maintenance repairs and modifications to building systems.
- Prepare detailed reports for upper management regarding system performance operational challenges and progress on ongoing projects.
- Lead root cause analysis (RCA) for any system failures or major incidents.
- Budgeting & Cost Management:
- Oversee the budgeting for equipment maintenance repairs and capital improvement projects.
- Work closely with the management team to forecast future operational and capital expenditures.
- Vendor Management:
- Manage relationships with external contractors and service providers for equipment maintenance repair and upgrades.
- Coordinate and oversee third-party inspections and ensure that vendors meet contractual and safety standards.
Qualifications:
- Experience:
- Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in facilities management operations or building engineering within a critical environment such as a data center mission-critical facility or industrial plant.
- Three years in supervisory or leadership experience in managing a team of engineers/technicians in a 24/7 operational environment.
- Skills & Certifications:
- Relevant certifications such as Journeyman Electrician HVAC Technician are a plus
- Familiarity with ISO standards NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) NEC (National Electrical Code) ASHRAE and other industry standards is preferred.
- Other Attributes:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to handle complex high-pressure situations.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact with both technical teams and upper management.
- Detail-oriented and highly organized with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.
