About the job:


The Fitness Supervisor 1 is charged with assisting the Fitness Supervisor in planning implementing and supervising fitness programs and classes while occasionally serving in a front-line lead role. The position contributes to the team by assisting with the leadership coordination and supervision of fitness instructors as part of a highly collaborative and innovative Leadership team within BPRD Recreation Facilities. The position is responsible for coordinating with the necessary program and facility maintenance functions while working closely with the Customer Service Representatives Facility Shift Leads and Aquatics Team to assure operations meet health and safety expectations as well as high customer expectations.

The position involves supporting all aspects of delivering the highest quality and the largest group exercise program in Central Oregon including managing day to day activities and providing leadership for daily operations including activities program staff training equipment care and responding to community and user expectations.

Varying times including weekends early morning and evening shifts.



What youll need for success:

Strong Knowledge of:

The individual in this classification is expected to possess and exhibit the following knowledge skills and abilities.

Principles development practices implementation and evaluation in assigned program;

Project management techniques and methods;

Effective supervision training and performance management practices;

Effective customer service best practices; and

Applicable laws codes regulations policies and procedures for assigned program area.


Skill and Ability to:

Demonstrate excellent planning organization problem solving initiative prioritization and conflict resolution skills;

Manage a high volume of tasks at one time including organizing and prioritizing own work and the work of others;

Exercise independent initiative and decision-making skills;

Work cooperatively with others and create positive constructive and respectful relationships with staff and the general public;

Analyze data and draw logical conclusions and effectively interpret policies and procedures;

Maintain working knowledge of software programs such as Microsoft Office including Word Outlook Excel and PowerPoint and other computer programs as well as operating common office equipment.

Effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing including by phone e-mail and in person.

Work independently with minimum direction while also working as part of a team and collaborating with others; and

Demonstrate a high attention to detail.


What were looking for:

Required Experience & Training:

  1. Associates degree or equivalent two years of college coursework; AND
  2. Two (2) years of experience in area of responsibility and/or performing similar tasks; AND
  3. Two (2) years of team lead experience; OR
  4. Any satisfactory combination of education experience and training.
  5. Experience in teaching a variety of water and land-based exercise classes preferred.


License and Certifications:

  1. Some positions in this classification may be required to have basic first aid and CPR training and certification.
  2. Other specialty licenses and certifications may be required depending on program area of assignment.

Position Specific Requirement

This position requires reporting to additional sites throughout the workday typically achieved in a motor vehicle OR other modes of transportation. If choosing a personal vehicle possession of or ability to obtain valid Oregon drivers license within 30 days with an acceptable driving history as defined by district driving policy.

If you do not have a drivers license or have an unacceptable driving history it does not disqualify you from this position only from driving a vehicle for district business.


Supervision Received:

Reports directly to a the Fitness Supervisor 3. Follows standard processes and procedures without supervision but confirms changes to standard practices and significant decision in advance.


Supervision Exercised:

Provides direction and supervision to staff which may include recruiting hiring training evaluating and managing performance developing goals providing discipline responding to grievances and effectively recommending terminations responsibilities.

May provide guidance and consultation to other district staff contractors and volunteers.
