The Retirement Systems Division has an opening for aSurvivor Benefits Analyst.This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) withState Benefits including health insurance paid vacation paid sick time paid holidays as well as retirement.
About Us
TheRetirement Systems Divisionadministers the statutory retirement and fringe benefit plans as authorized by the General Assembly of North Carolina. These include the following eight major retirement plans: Teachers and State Employees Retirement System (TSERS) Teachers and State Employees Retirement System for Law Enforcement Officers (TSERS LEO) the Local Government Employees Retirement System (LGERS) Local Governmental Employees Retirement System for Law Enforcement Officers (LGERS LEO) the Legislative Retirement System (LRS) the Consolidated Judicial Retirement System (CJRS) the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) and the Fire and Rescue Pension Fund.
The Benefits Processing Section is responsible for providing case management in the processing of the Death Benefits Programs for the States public pension plans including the Teachers and State Employees Retirement System the Local Governmental Employees Retirement System and several other smaller plans serving public employees.
TheSurvivor BenefitsProcessing section processes claims from surviving beneficiaries for death benefits.
Duties & Responsibilities
TheDepartment of State Treasurerscampus is located on Atlantic Avenue is surrounded by many shopping centers and restaurants has access to a 24-hour 7-day a week free gym on the campus and has free employee parking.
Effective July 1 2025 candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification. The knowledge skills and abilities listed in the vacancy announcement should be used as management preferences and be used to screen for the most qualified pool of applicants.
Management Preferences
Knowledge of retirement laws benefits administration payroll and/or directly related services policies and procedures; typically gained through professional work experience in similar roles/industries.
Experience performing research data collection and analysis of information reviewing and analyzing claim forms estate paperwork beneficiary forms death certificates members employment records and/or payroll records.
Demonstrated proficiency in software programs databases and information systems.
Proven ability to utilize Microsoft Excel to verify calculations are accurate and to calculate benefits and overpayments.

High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of related administrative experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
