Job Description

The member of the multidisciplinary team has experience as a recipient of mental health services for severe and persistent mental illness and is willing to use and share personal practical experience knowledge and first hand insight to benefit the team and clients. This individual provides personal first knowledge about the recovery process symptom management and persistence required to have a satisfying life.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides peer counseling support guidance and encouragement to clients.
  • Serves as mentor to clients to promote hope and empowerment
  • Collaborates with team to promote a team culture in which clients point of view experiences and preferences are recognized understood and respected throughout participation in program
  • Provides consultation concerning clients experiences with symptoms effects/side effects of medication clients responses to treatment and clients experience in recovery
  • Helps client and team members identify and understand stigma and discrimination associated with persons living with mental illness and develop strategies to reduce self-stigma amongst clients and stigma within treatment team.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of clients treatment progress in accordance to agency local state and federal standards

Requirements:

  • Peer certification must be able to be obtained within 1 year of starting in the position.
  • Have self-knowledge to manage their symptoms and are in active recovery
  • Must have strong commitment to the right and ability of each person living with a severe mental illness to live in the community work in competitive jobs and have access to helpful adequate and continuous supports and services.
  • Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to establish relationships with clients and to communicate and work effectively with others involved in clients treatment.
  • Ability to work well with an interdisciplinary team.
  • Must possess a valid Maryland Drivers License and have a current driving record with less than (3) points on it at the time of hire.
  • Must possess valid automobile insurance coverage and reliable transportation.
  • Willingly to transport clients in own vehicle when necessary.
