Job Description
**Information Technology Services intends to hire either a Systems Analyst or a Systems Administrator based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. **
We are seeking either a Systems Analyst or a Systems Administrator to support the operational needs in the Research Services department within the Information Technology Services (ITS) organization (the central IT provider across campus). This is an opportunity to work in a supportive exciting and mission-focused group dedicated to supporting research computing at the University of Iowa a comprehensive Research 1 institution.
An interest in learning new technologies is a key component of this position and this person will have the opportunity to learn about and work with a wide variety of technologies that enable research.
- Linux/Unix server systems administration.
- Configuration management and systems automation.
- High Performance Computing.
- Ethernet and high-speed networking technologies.
- Network Storage

This position is eligible for on-site work with the possibility for occasional hybrid work within the state of Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of employment. Per policy work arrangements will be reviewed annually and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.
Systems Analyst Key Job Duties (not all inclusive):
- Actively working to promote a welcoming and respectful work environment within Research Services ITS OneIT and the University.
- Install maintain and troubleshoot server hardware for Research Services including HPC and research storage offerings.
- Write documentation for internal and external audiences.
- Collect and analyze service data/metrics.
- Work in close collaboration with other IT groups to deliver optimal systems and services.
Systems Administrator Key Job Duties (not all inclusive):
- Actively working to promote a welcoming and respectful work environment within Research Services ITS OneIT and the University.
- Install maintain and troubleshoot server hardware for Research Services including HPC and research storage offerings.
- Work with automation and configuration management tools to provision systems and software.
- Participate in creating awareness within the organization of specific changes in hardware and software
- Write documentation for internal and external audiences.
- Collect and analyze service data/metrics.

Qualifications:
Systems Analyst:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies.
- Experience (typically 1 year or more) researching exploring and solving technical problems.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with technical and non-technical staff
- Demonstrated proficiency with computer software applications including Microsoft Office (e.g. Word Excel Outlook and PowerPoint) and HR Information Systems.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Strong interest in continuously learning and applying new ideas to innovative services and technologies.
- Experience supporting technology in a higher education setting.
- Some experience working with Unix/Linux in any setting.
- Experience with common IT security hardening techniques
- Experience troubleshooting computer hardware.
- Some exposure to common programing languages. Examples may include Python Perl Ruby Bash/Shell.
- Experience with compliance regimes such as: HIPAA NIST FISMA etc.
- Experience supporting scientific research.
- Some experience and/or knowledge of filesystems or network storage
Systems Administrator
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies.
- Experience researching exploring and solving technical problems.
- Typically 2-4 years experience with Unix/Linux in a multi-user environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with technical and non-technical staff.
- Some experience with common programing languages. Examples may include Python Perl Ruby Bash/Shell.
- Experience with common IT security hardening techniques
Desirable Qualifications:
- Strong interest in continuously learning and applying new ideas to innovative services and technologies.
- Experience with compliance regimes such as: HIPAA NIST FISMA etc.
- Experience supporting technology in a higher education setting.
- Experience supporting scientific research
- Experience with configuration management and automation tools. Examples may include Puppet SCCM Chef Ansible etc.
- Some exposure in any setting with virtualization.
- Experience troubleshooting computer hardware.
- Experience and or knowledge of supporting filesystems or network storage
