Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is looking to hire two (2) Weigh Station Technicians at the Suffolk Motor Carrier Service Center (MCSC)!

As a Weigh Station Technician youll play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of motorists and protecting Virginias highways by monitoring and inspecting overweight and oversized trucks. Youll work alongside State Police local law enforcement and other officials to enforce safety and weighing policies and procedures related to Virginias size and weight laws.

The Weight Station Technician ensures the enforcement of commercial vehicle size and weight regulations on Virginias highways contributing to the safety of motorists and protecting the integrity of Virginias highways bridges and tunnels. This role exists to monitor commercial vehicle activity at weigh stations issue citations for violations of size and weight laws ensure compliance with state and federal laws and coordinate with law enforcement personnel. The Weigh Station Technician is responsible for monitoring the functionality and accuracy of equipment to ensure that proper operational standards are upheld and support DMVs mission of safeguarding lives and serving the motoring public.

Training will be provided. The position will work rotating shifts on a 24/5 schedule. A shift differential of three percent will be added to the base salary.

Minimum Qualifications

Technical Skills: Proficiency in collecting editing and manipulating data using computers.

Industry Knowledge: Basic understanding of truck configuration and equipment and state and federal regulations for overweight and oversized vehicles.

Multitasking Abilities: Strong eye/hand coordination for tracking trucks on computer screens while monitoring highway traffic.

Problem-solving skills: Ability to troubleshoot truck equipment issues perform mathematical calculations and analyze data to recommend traffic control measures.

Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with customers and staff.

Flexibility and Endurance: Capability to work in confined spaces for extended periods maintain focus on safety monitoring and work rotating or permanent schedules.

Physical Fitness: Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions lift and transport 50 pounds and operate lawn maintenance equipment.

Technical Maintenance: Proficiency in performing minor scale repairs including using an impact wrench and breaker bar and maintaining facility cleanliness.

Licensing Requirements: Valid drivers license and a driving record that reflects respect for DMV regulations.

Additional Considerations

Knowledge of truck weighing procedures and policies related Virginia and federal laws and the Motor Vehicle Code of Virginia.
