Job Goals:

The Attendance Officer is employed by the Van Buren Intermediate School District (VBISD) and serves all 12 public school districts within the county as well as VBISD itself. While performing official duties the Attendance Officer has the authority of a Special Deputy Sheriff within school districts.

Responsibilities include investigating all reported cases of nonattendance and ensuring compliance with the Michigan Revised School Code MCL 380.1571380.1599. The officer works closely with various agencies including the Prosecutors Office District and Probate Court Juvenile Probation and VBISDs social and mental health programs to create and support programs that address and reduce truancy.

Additionally the Attendance Officer supports VBISD Emergency Management by assisting with CPR/First Aid classes drills exercises training sessions and other duties as assigned by the Emergency Manager.

Qualifications:

  • Preference given to individuals with current or former Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) certification.
  • Must hold or be able to obtain American Heart Association CPR/BLS Instructor credentials.
  • Must have or be able to obtain the following certifications within 12 months of hire:
    • NIMSand 800.

Work Experience:

  • Law enforcement experience preferred (especially with MCOLES certification).
  • Experience in school or education environments is a plus.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Ability to read analyze and interpret professional and legal documents.
  • Public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks independently.
  • Knowledge of court systems and the ability to testify in legal proceedings.
  • Strong documentation and reporting skills.
  • Familiarity with community resources and local systems.
  • Cultural competency and the ability to work with diverse populations.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Support the operations of VBISD Emergency Management Services.
  • Provide CPR/First Aid/AED and emergency preparedness training to schools and local stakeholders.
  • Collaborate effectively with the emergency management team.
  • Organize and participate in emergency response drills and exercises.
  • Uphold and model VBISDs guiding principles: Respect Integrity Compassion and Excellence.
  • Maintain regular and reliable in-person attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Valid drivers license required.

Terms of Employment: As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.
