Position Information:
The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is seeking a Food Inspector 1 (Compliance) to function as the Kosher Food Registration Program position will work within the Consumer Affairs unit of the Division of Food Safety and Inspection located at 10B Airline Drive Albany NY position will process and manage public complaints related to the sanitary conditions of food establishments and food safety issues. A key responsibility is administering the Kosher Food Registration program which includes handling consumer complaints and inquiries concerning these registrations and ensuring all legally mandated information is filed with the Department and displayed for consumers review at food establishments. This role includes several responsibilities: managing consumer inquiries and complaints serving as the primary contact for questions and complaints about kosher food products investigating and addressing compliance issues to maintain consumer trust and recommending administrative actions against non-compliant establishments. Additionally this position will act as a liaison to support kosher establishments and certifiers with registration processes manage an up-to-date database of registered entities and engage with community organizations to develop educational materials and outreach programs. May perform similar duties as assigned. This position is ideal for self-motivated individuals who are committed to consumer protection and enjoy engagement with diverse community groups.
The Food Inspector 1 Compliance position is full-time working 37.5 hours per week Monday-Friday. This position offers the opportunity for a part-time telecommuting schedule.
Salary:
The starting salary for Food Inspector 1 Compliance is $66951/year and the hiring salary for the PEF salary grade (SG) 18.
The candidates appointed to Food Inspector 1 Compliance will be eligible to participate in the New York State Performance Evaluation Program. Through this program employees receive yearly performance evaluations. Performance advances are payable to PEF employees whose base annual salary is below the job rate for their current position and who were rated Satisfactory or its equivalent on their yearly performance evaluation. Performance advance payments are added to an employees annual salary. Over time yearly performance advances may lead to the SG-18 job rate salary of $85138/ year!

Minimum Qualifications:
Non-Competitive Qualifications: Six years of experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Investigating customer inquiries and complaints as a customer service representative or responding to customer inquiries in a call center environment;
- Developing public awareness or consumer education programs relating to the sanitary conditions of food establishments and food safety issues or kosher food registration including but not limited to presentations to consumers consumer advocates regulatory agency personnel or food industry representatives;
- Conducting investigations involving the sanitary conditions of food establishments and food safety issues or kosher food registration.
- Analyzing and/or researching information or data related to the sanitary conditions of food establishments and food safety issues or kosher food registration.
Substitutions: an associates degree may substitute for two years of specialized experience; a bachelors degree may substitute for four years of specialized experience; a masters degree may substitute for one additional year of specialized experience.
Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidates will have the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of constituents from the public and various ethnic and religious communities that have an interest in kosher food availability. This may include public speaking at widely attended events to describe the Departments operation of the program and increase awareness among the related communities. While not required a general understanding of kosher food practices is beneficial.
Travel Requirements:
These positions require travel. Appointees must either possess at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter a valid drivers license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and have access to a motor vehicle when necessary or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the regular transportation requirements in carrying out their field work responsibilities. Additionally appointees may be required to travel out-of-state for overnight trips on occasion due to ongoing training commitments.
