GENERAL DESCRIPTION:


A great place to live for those interested in outdoor activities as Cheyenne is just 30 minutes from Curt Gowdy State Park about an hour from Rocky Mountain National Park and about 90 minutes from Glendo State Park and Reservoir. Located just 45 miles from two (2) Division 1 schools the University of Wyoming and Colorado State University for those who may want to pursue additional educational opportunities. Outdoor activities include hunting fishing camping boating backpacking mountain biking and skiing and just a 90-minute drive to Denver International Airport.

This position is a Health Physicist in the Land Quality Division (LQD). Under limited supervision this position functions as a specialist in health physics helping the LQD obtain an agreement with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to create the Source Material Program. This position will be required to draft any necessary regulatory guidance documents and maintain the new training program. This position will regularly work with the NRC to ensure that the newly developed program meets all of the compatibility requirements of the NRC. This position will ultimately implement the new program and be responsible for technically evaluating the radiological hazards associated with source material incidentally recovered from mineral addition this position will meet the NRC equivalent training to become a license reviewer and inspector. This position will also cross-train as a uranium recovery program inspector and license reviewer.

  • Participates in implementingrules and developing regulatory guidance and technical positions concerning operations that generate source material.
  • Maintain the new training program as well as a training tracking system.
  • Regularly interact with the NRC to ensure the new program meets the NRCs adequacy and compatibility requirements.
  • Transfer certain NRC records and licenses into the MIDAS system.
  • Analyzes and comprehends licensee-provided data (such as environmental monitoring data and exposure data) and using professional judgment ensures operators are in compliance and maintain exposures as low as is reasonably achievable (ALARA).
  • Performs complex technical review analysis and evaluation of license applications renewals and amendments using Health Physics principles.
  • Reviews radiological surveys reports and decommissioning activities using sound health physics principles.
  • Serves as technical lead in on-site inspections of licensed facilities to determine compliance with State and Federal radiological regulations license conditions and requirements contained in the licensee application.
  • Clearlycommunicates complex technical analysis issues and recommendations both orally and in writing to the staff the public the regulated community and other government agencies.
  • Produces detailed well-written technical reports inspection reports and division correspondence.
  • Analyzes impacts of licensed operations activities on public health safety and the environment.
  • Obtains qualification to become an NRC equivalent license reviewer and inspector.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE:


  • Knowledge of radiological health or risk assessment concepts.
  • Knowledge of NRC and Wyoming rules regulations and enabling statutes related to radiation protection.
  • Understanding of LQDs administrative rulemaking process.
  • Understanding of detection limits and uncertainties in obtaining field data.
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex technical analysis issues and recommendations both orally and written to staff the public and the regulated community.
  • Ability to prioritize work quickly so that deadlines are met while maintaining quality.
  • Advanced technical writing skills related to drafting regulations and guidance.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Education:
Bachelors Degree (typically in The Sciences)
Experience:
1-3 years of progressive work (typically in The Sciences) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Natural Resources Principal
OR
Education & ExperienceSubstitution:
4-7 years of progressive work experience (typically in The Sciences) with acquired knowledge at the levelof aNatural Resources Principal
