The role
Northeastern University London wishes to appoint a student Research Assistant to join the research project Imperial transitions in the early Cold War: the UK and the USA in Thessaloniki (Greece) 1946-49. The project represents the first research collaboration between NU London and the American College of Thessaloniki and is supported by a research grant from the British Academy. It investigates the swift transition of imperial power which took place in the early Cold War when Great Britain withdrew as a foremost global Power and was largely replaced by the USA as the leader in the western bloc. While the broad dynamic of this imperial transition have been studied this project contends that there is still much to be learnt if this transition is approached through transnational regional and geospatial methods. For this purpose the project used the setting of Greece during its civil war (1946-49) and especially of its northern part and its largest city Thessaloniki to examine how this swift in Great Power politics affected regionally one of the frontiers of the early Cold War.
We are seeking a driven organized and energetic student Research Assistant to support this exciting new research initiative. The RA will work with the project leads Professor Olly Ayers (NU London) Dr Christos Aliprantis (ACT) and Maria Kyriakidou (ACT) to research the shifting imperial geospatial dynamics in post-war Thessaloniki. Conducting online research as well as visiting libraries and archives in London the RA will collate spatial data and use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to create a series of interactive maps that will offer new insights into the local and international geographies of the early Cold War. They will receive training in data handling and GIS tools so no prerequisite experience is required. Students of any disciplinary background are eligible to apply (please see person specification below).
Duties and Responsibilities
Support the Research Team in the creation of geospatial datasets through independent research in primary and secondary source materials
Use GIS tools (for example ArcGIS) to create interactive maps for historical research
Support the projects wider logistical needs for example helping organize on-campus workshops and research visits

To undertake this role the following should apply should you not have the experience below please highlight where transferrable skills would assist with you undertaking the role.
A demonstrable enthusiasm for the aims and objectives of the Imperial Transitions project
A willingness to learn new digital skills while working collaboratively across a multinational team of researchers
Outstanding organizational skills including time management event planning and use of online communication tools
Experience of conducting independent research and/or using digital humanities research tools is desirable but not essential
