Job Description

The Lead Steel Material Handler is responsible for overseeing and participating in the safe efficient handling and movement of structural steel materials throughout the fabrication shop. This position ensures workflow is prioritized effectively safety protocols are followed and material handling processes are executed with precision and efficiency. The Lead will serve as the go-to person for material movement coordination and will support the team by providing training guidance and hands-on leadership.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Daily Operations Oversight:
    • Lead and coordinate daily activities of the steel material handling team.
    • Ensure material is correctly staged for production and shipping according to schedule.
    • Monitor material flow and proactively address bottlenecks or delays.
  • Material Handling:
    • Load and unload structural steel from trucks and storage areas using forklifts and overhead cranes.
    • Safely transfer steel to appropriate production areas and storage locations.
    • Perform rigging and signaling duties for the movement of large steel components.
  • Team Leadership:
    • Provide on-the-job training for new team members on material handling procedures crane and forklift operation and safety practices.
    • Serve as the liaison between the material handling crew and shop supervision.
    • Monitor team performance and help ensure team goals and production deadlines are met.
  • Safety & Compliance:
    • Promote and enforce strict adherence to Met-Cons safety policies and procedures.
    • Conduct safety checks of lifting equipment tools and work areas.
    • Lead by example in maintaining a clean safe and organized work environment.
  • Documentation & Reporting:
    • Complete and maintain accurate records of material movement and inventory staging.
    • Communicate material shortages delays or safety concerns to supervisors promptly.

Qualifications:

  • 3 years of material handling experience in a steel fabrication or industrial environment.
  • Prior leadership or team lead experience strongly preferred.
  • Proficient in the operation of overhead cranes and forklifts (certifications preferred).
  • Basic rigging knowledge and the ability to train others in safe rigging practices.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work with cross-functional teams.
  • Must be able to read basic fabrication drawings and understand material tags.
  • Basic math skills and attention to detail are essential.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods (8-10 hours) and work in outdoor conditions as needed.
  • Must be dependable organized and able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
