Job Description

Title: Clinical Educator Speech and Hearing

Employee Classification: PE

General Summary

Provide therapeutic direction in assessment and treatment for developmental and neurogenic communication delays/disorders/deficits across the lifespan to graduate clinicians in the speech-language pathology practicums.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Core Clinical Duties:

  • Supervising student clinicians: Observing client sessions reviewing treatment plans and providing feedback on clinical skills such as assessment intervention and documentation.
  • Offer direction and support to students as they navigate clinical experiences helping them develop their clinical reasoning problem-solving skills and professional judgment.
  • Evaluate students; progress in various areas including clinical skills communication and professionalism using formative and summative assessments. Discuss with faculty student progress in practicum.
  • Engage with the community to support people seeking access to communication and hearing services.
  • Work with educational and healthcare facilities to provide connections to internal resources at the EMU Speech & Hearing Clinic.
  • Assure compliance with ASHA (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) and Council on Academic Accreditation (Masters degree accreditation) standards as they relate to clinic operations and student instruction.
  • Communicate between agencies to facilitate service delivery.
  • Develop visions of new service delivery models for the clinic in coordination with colleagues.
  • Participate in recruitment and fundraising initiatives.
  • Provide program integration support.
  • Coordinate clinic resource access for all program students faculty and part-time lecturers.
  • Communicate with instructors regarding educational support for clinical assessments and interventions.
  • Identify opportunities for course and clinical interventions to be integrated for support of clinical assessment and treatment.
  • Develop evidence-based practice information exchange of information between clinical educators and classroom educators.
  • Work with agencies within EMU to build an inter-connected network of on-campus service providers

Other Duties:

  • Attend departmental meetings.
  • Attend professional meetings.
  • Engage in professional development.
  • Perform related departmental duties as required.
  • Maintain calendar and supervisor scheduling of student clinicians internships and clients each semester.
  • Act as a liaison between the students supervisors/sites and CSD program.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge and skills in speech-language pathology and administrative duties typically acquired through the completion of a Masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology.

American Speech and Hearing Association Certification of Clinical Competence in Speech Pathology is necessary.

Must be a licensed SLP in the State of Michigan.

Four years experience (beyond certification) in the field of speech-language pathology is necessary.

Familiarity with medical terminology and medical/clinical office operations is necessary.

Ability to communicate and work easily with public faculty students and clients with disabilities is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with a variety of speech and language disorders across the lifespan is desired.

Experience in both hospital/clinic and public school settings is desirable.

Prior supervisory experience with graduate clinicians or clinical fellows is preferred.
