The Department of Engineering & Public Works Streets Division is looking to fill three (3) Seasonal Equipment Operator I - II (FLEX) positions!

This recruitment will be used to fill three (3) vacancies within the Streets & Fleet Maintenance Division.


This position is a flex position which creates a career path to promote within the series upon demonstration of the ability to meet current performance standards and minimum qualifications for the next level.The level at which the selected applicant is appointed will be based on the applicants qualifications and other job-related requirements. If hired at the lower level the successful applicant will be promoted to the higher level upon meeting the minimum qualifications for the higher level completing the training plan and demonstrating competency in the work as determined by the supervisor.


Are you looking for a BENEFITED SEASONAL position Come join the CBJ Streets maintenance team where you will operate snow removal equipment including trucks with plows and or sanders motor graders loaders and rotary snow blowers. This positions seasonal duration is typically 5 months and runs from the beginning of November through the end of March. Applicants must be flexible on the start and stop date.

Proficiency with Heavy Equipment:You already have robust skills in operating heavy machinery including motor graders. Your hands-on experience with safe operation is key to the job. Please note a skill exam will be required as part of the interview process.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

This is a seasonal role with a typical duration of 5 months running from November through March. The position generally follows a Monday through Friday schedule.

During the winter months we operate on rotating shifts: 1:00 am 9:00 am 4:00 am 12:00 pm and 8:00 am 4:00 pm.

Shifts are assigned on a two-month rotation based on staffing needs.


Employees report daily to the CBJ Street Maintenance Shop at 7100 Glacier Hwy. At the beginning of each shift you will be dispatched to various work locations around the event of significant weather events such as snow or flooding you may be required to work overtime including weekends and holidays to ensure the safety of the traveling public.

Typical Responsibilities

As a member of the Streets Maintenance Crew your primary responsibilities will focus on seasonal maintenance of CBJ streets during the winter months.


Key duties include:

Snow and Ice Control: Operate heavy and light-duty equipment for snow plowing salting and sanding to ensure safe driving conditions.


Gravel Road Maintenance: Maintain and repair gravel roads to manage winter wear and ensure continued accessibility.


Asphalt Patching: Address and repair potholes and other asphalt issues as they arise during the winter season.


Tasks at times are performed under hazardous conditions and employees are expected to be particularly alert and careful whenever operating assigned equipment. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion by observation and through results obtained. This position regularly works outdoors in cold and/or wet weather conditions.

This position requires heavy lifting physical endurance and the ability to perform physically demanding tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

Equipment Operator I (Range 14)Step 1 $29.51 - Step 3 $31.56

Education:

Experience:

Two (2) years of heavy equipment operation experience. Preferred experience includes: operating heavy and light motorized equipment including front-end loaders backhoes and dump trucks in hauling biosolid materials the construction and/or maintenance of streets roadways utilities airport runways airport taxiways airport ramps and/or airport aprons using hand and power tools performing minor servicing of equipment and applying safety procedures.

Other:

Valid Class B CDL with Airbrakes & Tanker at time of application. Must obtain State of AK Class A CDL with Airbrakes & Tanker within 1 year of appointment.

Certification as an ATSSA Flagger (or equivalent) within 6 months of appointmentand forcontinued employment.

Continued employment and advancement opportunities

Continued employment requires completion of the on-the-job training program meeting or exceeding performance standards and the following conditions:

Within two (2) years of appointment as an Equipment Operator I the employee must successfully complete a skills and knowledge exam for proficiency in operating a motor grader regardless of addition if the employees performance as Equipment Operator I meets or exceeds standards the employee will be eligible for promotion to an Equipment Operator II.

OSHA Requirements: This position may also require attendance at and certification (as available) in CPR First Aid and Confined Space Entrant and/or attendant within 18 months of appointment.

SPECIAL NOTE:*Initial appointment to all FMCSA positions requiring a CDL will be made conditionally pending (1) receipt of verified negative results of pre-employment testing for controlled substances and (2) passing a 3-year drug & alcohol testing background check with previous DOT employers. Employees must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse and provide CBJ with paper and electronic consent for a full query of the drivers Clearinghouse record. Employee will then be subject to the City and Boroughs drug-testing program. Operator II (Range 16) Step 1 $33.64 - Step 3 $35.92

Experience:

AND

Demonstrated proficiency on a motor grader regardless of conditions or ability to achieve proficiency within three (3) months of appointment and for continued employment.

Substitution:

Completion of a CBJ equipment operation-training program may substitute for one year of specialized experience. Certification of completion of training from other agencies will be considered for equivalency as a substitute for the CBJ training program.

Valid Class A Commercial Drivers License with airbrakes and Tanker (N) endorsement at time of application however must obtain valid Class A State of Alaska Commercial Drivers License with airbrakes and Tanker (N) endorsement by time of appointment if selected.
