Primary Purpose of Position:

The North Carolina Museum of History is seeking an experienced and collaborative Editorial Supervisor (Editor in Chief) to lead the editorial and publications efforts across the museum division. This position plays a critical role in shaping how historical narratives are communicated to the public through exhibitions printed materials and digital content.

The Editorial Supervisor (Editor in Chief) part of the Communications and Public Engagement section helps to educate the public by providing editorial services for the museum division through writing reviewing and editing publications promotional materials web content exhibit labels and more. The Editorial Supervisor (Editor in Chief) supervises two full-time historical publications editors and closely collaborates with graphic design marketing curatorial exhibit and education staff.


Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide editorial leadership for museum publications including but not limited to exhibit labels web pages marketing materials and educational resources.
  • Supervise two full-time Historical Publications Editors each managing a key museum magazine and oversee editorial workflows and production schedules.
  • Collaborate closely with curators educators graphic designers and other communication staff to develop engaging accurate and accessible content for diverse audiences.
  • Maintain and update institutional tone style and editorial guidelines to ensure consistency across all museum communications.
  • Review and edit written materials for clarity historical accuracy readability and alignment with the museums brand.
  • Coordinate with external contributors and vendors to facilitate timely publication production.

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work Monday-Friday 8am-5pm.
  • Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends.

Bachelors degree in communications public relations public affairs media journalism English or related field from an appropriately accredited institution
AND
four years of experience in communications public relations or publicity work;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience.

The Communications and Public Engagement Section connects people to North Carolinas history by crafting clear compelling and inclusive stories across print digital and public platforms. This section comprises a team of ten staff members responsible for museum communications marketing digital content web services editorial and graphic design.

The Division of State History Museums collects preserves and shares stories and artifactsNorth Carolinas rich and complex historylocally regionally nationally and globallyby collecting artifacts and telling the stories that connect the past to the present. Through exhibitions publications and educational programs we provide accessible inclusive experiences both onsite and virtually.
