Reading Specialist Job Summary:
The Reading Teacher provides targeted Academic Intervention Services (AIS) to students identified as Tier 3 in the Response to Intervention (RTI) framework. This educator plays a critical role in accelerating student literacy growth by delivering intensive evidence-based reading addition the Reading Teacher serves as a literacy resource for faculty by designing and delivering professional development supporting effective reading strategies in all content areas and promoting a culture of high-quality literacy instruction.
Reading Specialist Key Responsibilities:
Student Intervention and Support
- Provide intensive small-group and individualized reading instruction to Tier 3 students using evidence-based practices.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to analyze student data and develop RTI intervention plans.
- Progress monitor Tier 3 students regularly and use data to refine instruction.
- Administer diagnostic assessments to identify specific reading deficits and learning needs.
- Maintain clear documentation of intervention plans student progress and outcomes.
- Instruction using pull-out and push-in support models.
Professional Development and Teacher Support
- Design and deliver high-impact professional development sessions focused on literacy best practices.
- Model effective reading strategies during classroom visits and coaching sessions.
- Collaborate with grade-level teams and instructional staff to integrate literacy into all content areas.
- Support teachers in using formative assessments to drive literacy instruction and differentiate based on student needs.
- Serve as a resource for selecting and implementing reading materials and instructional tools.
Collaboration and Leadership
- Participate actively in RTI MTSS and data team meetings.
- Communicate with parents and caregivers regarding student progress and strategies for support at home.
- Stay current with research and trends in reading instruction and share findings with staff.
- Contribute to a school-wide culture of literacy excellence.
Reading Speciialist Qualifications:
- Valid NYS Literacy teaching (K-6) certification in Literacy
- Masters degree in Reading Literacy Education or a related field preferred.
- Deep knowledge of phonemic awareness phonics fluency vocabulary and comprehension instruction.
- Strong data analysis skills and ability to adjust instruction based on student performance.
- Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
