Intern Spencer Art Reference Library & Archives Artist File Initiative Application Deadline:8/7/2025 Location:Kansas City MO Total Hours:160 hours(Fall) Eligibility:Open to UMKC students approved for a Mellon Internship About the Role Are you passionate about archival research artist legacies and art history The Artist File Initiative (AFI) Intern will work within the Spencer Art Reference Library & Archives to support the Artist File Initiative a program that documents the careers of Kansas City artists. This internship provides hands-on experience in archival organization artist file management and research methodologies offering valuable skills in library sciences museum archives and curatorial research. What Youll Do - Review & Organize Artist Files: Ensure consistency across the program by assessing files and identifying missing documents.
- Develop Archival Structures: Rehouse copy and organize materials to meet archival standards and facilitate research access.
- Create File Descriptions: Depending on time contribute written descriptions for newly organized files.
- Engage with Artists & Their Legacies: Conduct oral histories with artists (if applicable) to further document their careers.
- Learn Archival Best Practices: Gain a deep understanding of how physical and digital materials are preserved for long-term research use.
Who You Are - Must be anundergraduate student at UMKCpursuing a degree in the humanities.
- Pursuing a degree in the Humanities with an interest in visual arts libraries or archival studies.
- Familiar with research methodologies ideally using archival materials.
- Strong in verbal written and observational skills.
- Comfortable using Microsoft 365 (Word Excel etc.) (preferred).
- Highly organized detail-oriented and passionate about preserving Kansas Citys artistic legacy.
- Able to work independently while following established procedures and supervisor feedback.
