Job Description

Position: Teacher of the Visually Impaired/TVI: (.6 FTE)

Organizational Scope:

To serve as a teacher of the visually impaired for Nashoba Regional District. Responsibilities include all appropriate planning instruction IEP support services and assessment for students who require TVI services.

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Appropriately develop a district-wide schedule to meet all the TVI service delivery needs.
  2. Provide direct instruction in the general education classroom and or outside of the general education classroom and/or consult services for students as identified in the IEP.
  3. Select appropriate instructional programs and methodologies plan and implement instruction that matches students IEP goals and objectives and accommodations.
  4. The ability to design and implement instruction that corresponds to the students visual functioning needs
  5. Teach Braille and assistive technology when needed
  6. Order and maintain braille large print cassette books and any audio license or materials needed to support students.
  7. Register students with the State Vision Resource Library and/or the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind
  8. Collaborate with IEP team members to assist with transition service support and coordination of services.
  9. Consult with parents/guardians regarding their childs programming and suggestions to support families.
  10. Participate in all required team meetings for caseload and write Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
  11. Responsible for the assessment and evaluation of functional vision in the educational setting for current caseload and any initial evaluations write reports and present at IEP meetings.
  12. Write progress reports in alignment with the District reporting cycles in all goal areas on the caseload
  13. Provide orientation of new buildings and new schedules to students with visual impairments on your caseload.
  14. Teach students to travel with proficiency safety and confidence in familiar and unfamiliar settings
  15. Attend District PD sessions and keep up to date on current practices materials and research related to the field
  16. Perform other related tasks or duties at the discretion of the Director of Student Services for Nashoba Regional School District.

Job Requirements:

  1. DESE Licensure for Vision Impairments
  2. Masters Degree in Education/Special Education
  3. A minimum of three years of experience working with children with vision impairments and/or Deaf/blind

Physical demands vary in keeping with the assignment and age of the students but the position generally requires the ability to walk and stand on tile flooring to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds and to bend and twist regularly at the waist knees and neck.

Depending on assignment much of the work is performed in a typical classroom environment requiring minimal to light physical effort. This may include everyday discomforts and distractions typical of a school setting such as proximity to students and colleagues temperature variations frequent interruptions and moderate noise. This position may require the ability to operate a computer keyboard and standard office equipment


Terms of Employment Evaluation of Performance and Salary:

The Special Education Teacher is a Nashoba Regional School District Unit A position. Terms of employment including evaluation and salary are covered by the provisions of the Unit A collective bargaining agreement currently in effect.
