Under the supervision of the Executive Director the Reading Specialist/Reading Teacher will provide and lead reading instruction and assessment to tutorial sites.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Monitors the instructional program provided by tutors and provide ongoing support and coaching to help tutors improve performance and achieve reading objectives which includes closing the achievement gap between school and homework.
Provides intense coaching on the use of the instructional model and the science of reading research
Facilitate tutors and coordinators use of evidence-based instructional strategies including differentiated instruction for all learners
Coordinates the gathering selecting and analysis of data.
Assists site coordinators in identifying strengths and areas for improvement in English/language arts and recommend responses that maximize student achievement in reading and reading development
Takes initiatives and proactively identify ways to strengthen tutorial sites
Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability with a sense of urgency and zeal for ensuring that all students meet grade level expectations (at a minimum) in English/language arts and attain the foundational reading skills
Demonstrates professionalism and seeks out feedback and provides constructive feedback to tutors coordinators and assistant coordinators
Perform other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Current knowledge of research and effective practices in the areas of reading development reading instruction assessment the science of reading and professional development
Ability to provide intense coaching to coordinators assistant coordinators and tutors on the alignment of the written taught and tested curriculum
Ability to provide tutorial sites leadership regarding curriculum pacing and resources to support instruction with a deep understanding of the progression of the knowledge skills and processes of education as defined in the Virginia Standards of Learning
Ability to analyze data at the student and tutorial site levels and be able to assist coordinators assistant coordinators on the use this data to modify their instruction to increase academic performance
Ability to train coordinators and tutors in the scope of reading: phonemic awareness phonics vocabulary development fluency and comprehension
Excellent interpersonal skills flexible and approachable work style
Ability to relate easily to parents coordinators and assistant coordinators and to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and with a variety of groups
Excellent oral and written communication and collaboration skills
Excellent presentation skills
Ability to observe and assess the transfer of training and learning into practice
Excellent organizational skills
Ability to problem-solve independently
Proficient in the use of technology
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Valid Teaching License required Reading Specialist endorsement recommended English endorsement recommended possess strong English/language skills
Minimum three years of successful teaching experience with at least three years of teaching reading or English/language arts at the appropriate grade level span or currently teaching reading
Experience working in diverse settings
Experience coaching and collaborating with teachers
Experience planning for and facilitating professional development workshops for teachers
Familiarity and experience with reading and writing workshops and small group guided and strategy instruction in reading and writing
Extensive experience with innovative teaching techniques instructional materials and current trends in English/reading
