Job Description

Position Title: Occupational Health and Safety Officer
Department: Risk Management
Position Type: Full-time Limited Term (August 18 2025 until March 31 2026)

Position Description

Reporting to the Manager Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Safety & Security the OHS Officer supports the development implementation and continuous improvement of health and safety programs at the university. The role ensures day-to-day compliance with relevant occupational health and safety legislation and assists in fostering a safe and healthy working and learning environment for faculty staff students and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

Workplace Safety Inspections & Compliance

  • Perform regular in-person inspections of labs shops classrooms and other campus spaces to detect hazards and confirm compliance with OHS policies and legislation.
  • Identify unsafe conditions unsafe acts and lapses in procedure and take immediate steps to address and correct them.
  • Ensure signage protective equipment and safety infrastructure (like eyewash stations and fire extinguishers) are properly maintained and functional.

Incident Reporting and Investigation

  • Respond on-site to incidents and near-misses to support immediate resolution provide first-hand documentation and help prevent recurrence.
  • Assist in root cause investigations and track follow-up actions to completion.
  • Maintain the incident log and conduct walk-throughs to verify hazard mitigation.

Hazard Assessment and Control

  • Support departments in conducting field-based hazard assessments and job safety analyses.
  • Evaluate physical workspaces and tasks for potential risks especially when equipment chemicals or manual handling are involved.
  • Recommend practical low-tech control measuresfrom signage to procedural updatesthat are easily implemented and effective.

Support for Safety Programs

  • Support the rollout and day-to-day maintenance of hands-on safety programs: chemical safety biosafety shop safety and contractor monitoring.
  • Keep track of chemical inventory safety gear and lab/shop equipment inspections.
  • Draft and update clear usable Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs) informed by direct observation and input from frontline workers.

Practical Safety Support

  • Conduct field checks to ensure that workers students and contractors are following safety protocols.
  • Ensure proper PPE use safe tool handling and compliance with confined space and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Provide on-site presence during potentially hazardous activities offering real-time guidance and intervention if needed.

Qualifications

  • A relevant OHS diploma with one to three years of experience in a similar role or an acceptable combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation (Nova Scotia OHS Act and Regulations).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated analytical interpersonal and communication skills as well as a solid knowledge of MS Office components
  • Proven proactive approach with an ability to work under minimal supervision and to make suitable judgments and decisions
  • Strong time management skills and prioritization skills with ability to work under pressure
  • Experience in a university setting is considered an asset.
  • Experience in a scientific and/or industrial setting is considered an asset.
Working Conditions
  • Mix of office and field work across various campus buildings including labs workshops and construction sites.
  • May involve exposure to hazardous materials or emergency situations.
