Thispostingisfor TransportationWorker II inour Johnston CountyMaintenance Unit.
Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance repair and construction of State maintained roads.
In this position you will be setting up work zones installing traffic control devices repairing asphalt pavements clearing right of way of debris and hazards assisting with pipe installation and operating a variety of hand and power tools.
You will operate various pieces of equipment that includes but is not limited to an asphalt maintainer asphalt patch truck tandem dump truck crack sealing machine rollers sweepers skid steer and backhoe.
This position you will monitor tasks performed by other transportation workers respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal downed trees and traffic control cleanup etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled nightwork.
You will be expected to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Drivers License with N endorsement.

Working knowledge of the principles involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Manual labor includes but is not limited to operating chain saws shoveling driving trucks and litter pickup. Employees must be able to operate the minimum amount of equipment required in the preceding level. Employees at this level may train on and operate equipment associated with the specialist level for a small percentage of time. Work may include lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly. Employees must have the ability to climb bend traverse steep and uneven terrain and work in extreme temperature conditions. May require work during nontraditional workhours including nights weekends and holidays. Position is subject to emergency callback.

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements Either possession of a current Commercial Drivers License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Drivers License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire
