Who are we looking for
GHD is seeking a young professional with 3 to 5 years of relevant experience to join our Environmental Due Diligence team in Waterloo Ontario. This position will support the project team in all aspects of environmental due diligence work including environmental site assessments brownfield redevelopment environmental risk management environmental litigation support environmental compliance and excess soil management. This role will be expected to coordinate and execute projects related to GHDs Contamination Assessment and Remediation services. The projects will involve completion of Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) conducted in accordance with the CSA Standard; Phase One and Two ESAs conducted in accordance with Ontario Regulation 153/04 to support Risk Assessments and filing of Records of Site Condition (RSCs); completion of environmental investigations related to risk management environmental compliance and/or environmental litigation support; completion of environmental assessments and investigations in accordance with Ontario Regulation 406/19 (On-Site and Excess Soil Management).
This is a full-time position that involves a combination of office and fieldwork and requires travel to project sites.

Responsibilities
- Data Collection and Analysis: Collate and analyze data using preset tools methods and formats. Work independently to support field and office components of environmental site assessments. This includes reviewing site records historical documentation (e.g. aerial imagery fire insurance plans) and previous environmental reports as part of due diligence efforts as well as interpreting field and laboratory data in relation to applicable regulatory criteria.
- Personal Capability Building: Develop personal capabilities by engaging in formal and informal training coaching and development planning activities. Maintain professional accreditation where applicable and keep up to date with evolving technology regulatory frameworks and best practices through continued education and participation in industry events and conferences.
- Health Safety and Environment: Follow the organizations HSE policies and procedures to ensure safe work environments and practices. Monitor field activities for compliance with safety requirements during drilling test pitting and remedial excavation. Identify and mitigate environmental risks and unsafe behaviors in the field or office escalating serious concerns when necessary.
- Client & Customer Management (External): Support senior staff in maintaining key client relationships by assisting with proposal preparation project coordination and timely delivery of services. Engage with smaller clients independently ensuring quality service and responsiveness.
- Sampling and Testing: Perform field sampling of soil groundwater soil vapor and indoor air. Oversee and supervise subcontractors during borehole drilling monitoring well installation and soil excavation. Conduct soil logging and subsurface classification to determine geological conditions. Operate field instrumentation (e.g. PID interface probes water quality meters data loggers) and ensure that sampling aligns with regulatory standards and best practices.
- Project Management: Contribute to project execution by coordinating fieldwork schedules procurement of vendors subcontractor oversight and logistical support. Work within established project plans to ensure timely and efficient completion of deliverables.
- Environmental Impact Assessment: Contribute to the execution of environmental site assessments (Phase I and II ESA) and other evaluations to identify and document environmental impacts. Conduct site inspections and environmental compliance audits in accordance with relevant standards and frameworks.
- Solutions Analysis: Interpret complex environmental data and site information to identify viable solutions for site management remediation and risk mitigation. Support senior consultants in developing technical strategies based on regulatory obligations and field findings.
- Insights and Reporting: Assist in preparing a wide range of technical documents including Phase I/II ESA reports remedial action reports compliance documentation monitoring summaries and excess soil management plans. Support data integration and presentation for project reports and proposals.
- Bid Solicitation/Request for Proposal/Tender Preparation: Gather technical inputs and assist in drafting bid documentation RFPs and RFTs to support business development and project acquisition efforts.
- Community of Practice Management: Actively participate in professional communities of practice related to environmental consulting and assessment to expand technical knowledge and contribute to team development.
- Environmental Risk Management: Support the identification and assessment of environmental liabilities through site evaluations historical data review and field inspections. Contribute to the development of mitigation strategies and ensure proper documentation of risk management measures.
Education:
- Bachelors degree (or higher) in Environmental Engineering Civil Engineering Geological Engineering Environmental Science or a relevant discipline.
- Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) or Professional Geoscientist (P. Geo.) designation in Ontario is an asset.
- Eligible to be registered as a Qualified Person (QP) with appropriate professional certification (P. Eng. or P. Geo). Strong candidates who are not eligible may also be considered.
- Have a valid drivers license.
Experience
- General Experience: 3 - 5 years of professional environmental experience (i.e. air quality environmental compliance water/wastewater etc.)
- Experience in coordinating various aspects of a projects such as organizing field programs vendor procurement communication with internal and external stakeholders etc.
- Knowledge or familiarity of pertinent local provincial and federal environmental regulations and permitting requirements.
- Experience in supervision/oversight of drilling activities for environmental investigations (i.e. borehole advancements installation of monitoring wells) oversight of excavations; soil classification and characterization (i.e. soil logging); collection of soil samples conducting field activities such as groundwater sampling soil vapor sampling etc. and measurement and collection of field data using various instruments and equipment.
- Familiarity with industry standard environmental sampling procedures/practices and the equipment used during sampling and measurement of field data.
- Experience in preparation of technical documents (figures data tables etc.) including environmental reports (Phase I/II ESAs Phase One/Two ESAs Excess Soil Planning Documents etc.).
- Experience working with Microsoft Excel and Word to tabulate data and prepare reports. Proficiency in other relevant software programs including AutoCAD GIS and Adobe Acrobat are considered an asset.
