The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill one (1) regular full-time position
in the class of Hazardous Materials Specialist I II or III at the Department of Community Services.
THE POSITION
The candidate selected will be assigned to the I II or III level depending on their background and experience and at the discretion of the hiring authority. Depending on the level of position placement the selected candidate will perform increasingly complex duties as outlined in the class specifications.The salary range for the classification levels are as follows per the Yolo County Salary Schedule (effective 06/29/25):
  • Hazardous Materials Specialist I: $73257.60 - $89044.80 Annually
  • Hazardous Materials Specialist II: $84281.60 - $102440.00 Annually
  • Hazardous Materials Specialist III: $92372.80 - $112278.40 Annually
The ideal candidate is an energetic and self-motivated individual who follows directions and has excellent customer service and communication skills. This candidate has the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and has a strong desire to continue learning ensuring they are up-to-date with new or changing environmental rules and regulations.

The selected candidate will join the Hazardous Materials Unit a part of the Department of Community ServicesEnvironmental Health Services Division. The Hazardous Materials Unit currently has five main programs: Aboveground Petroleum Storage Act (APSA) California Accidental Release Prevention (CalARP) Hazardous Materials Business Plan (HMBP) Hazardous Waste Generators (Small Quantity Large Quantity Treatment facilities) and the Underground Storage Tank program. HazMat Unit staff also conduct Waste Tires program inspections and participate in the HazMat Emergency Response On-call program. Explore theCounty website for more information on these programs.

Normal work hours in the Environmental Health Division are Monday through Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM with a 1-hour lunch. Staff may request an alternative work schedule as outlined in applicable County policy. Hazardous Materials Specialists work at various geographic locations throughout the County both inside and outside in all types of climatic conditions and will be exposed to varying noise levels and hazardous materials. Incumbents work alone or closely with others and should be able to verbally communicate and address a variety of stressful situations with diverse stakeholders in a calm professional manner. The incumbents are also required to travel independently and work rotating schedules and standby to respond to emergency incidents involving hazardous materials and waste as part of an on-call program which may include irregular hours off-shifts (nights and weekends) and holidays.

Applicants who possess a degree or completed coursework that is not from an accredited college or university must submit one of the following:
  1. A written statement from a U.S. accredited university or college that states that the applicant is qualified for entrance to a program of graduate studies for which a degree in a related field is required.
  2. An evaluation of the applicants degree and coursework equivalency by a private organization that provides foreign credential evaluation services. The evaluation must include a comparison of comparable U.S. courses for content credit and grade.
All foreign transcripts or diplomas must be in English. If the institution does not provide these documents in English the applicant will need to provide a translation which has been done by a professional agency. The County of Yolo will accept education as equivalent to U.S. accreditation from institutions that are listed as members of the International Association of Universities (IAU). Note: Foreign language documents must include a precise word-for-word English translation of all foreign language documents. It is the responsibility of each applicant to prove to the satisfaction of the County that the applicant meets the specific requirements listed on the job announcement for each specific examination. The following is a list of private organizations that provide foreign credential evaluation services. Fees range from $50 to $400 per document; processing times vary from 5-20 business days. The County of Yolo does not endorse these business entities; this list has been developed for informational purposes only.Verification of Training / Certification:Documentation of successful completion of forty (40) hours of Hazardous Waste Operations (40-HR HAZWOPR) training as referenced by 8 CCR 5192 and Hazardous Materials Technician level training as referenced by 19 CCR 2520 is required at time of application submission for Hazardous Materials Specialist II / III.Acceptable forms of certification and/or formal training documentation are certificates that list the applicants name institution name course title and date the certificate was awarded. If applicable the verifying documentation should include a certification/license number as well as an expiration date.

Supplemental Questions: Supplemental questions are designed to elicit specific information regarding a candidates experience education and training. Responses should be consistent with the information on your application and are subject to verification. If a job included responsibilities applicable to several questions separate the different functions of the job to answer all the questions completely.
