Job Description Summary

The Associate University Chaplain for Community and Religious Life is responsible for leading the Office of the Chaplain (OC) programs for students faculty and staff related to Care and Community and Religious Life. Care and Community encompasses coordinating crisis response with other caregiving offices scheduling on-call chaplain services and resourcing office staff and partners for spiritual care and counsel. Care and Community also involves executing or participating in planning for several legacy events including Service of Remembrance and Lovefeast. Religious Life includes oversight of Religious Life Professionals and student religious life organizations exploration and nurture of emergent ministries and direct programming related to religious life on campus.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

Care and Community (55%)

  • Provide psychologically informed spiritual care and counsel and resource OC staff and Religious Life Professionals (RLPs) to do the same including connections with other caregiving offices and departments.

  • Coordinate on-call schedule and crisis response for OC staff including representation on related Campus Life and University working groups.

  • Participate in regularly scheduled chaplain on-call shifts and support campus crisis response which may include after hours and weekends.

  • Supervision of policies and processes related to the Chaplains Emergency Fund (CEF).

  • Plan and lead Summit: Christian Life at Wake Forest a pre-orientation program including identifying student leaders and managing a program of community building and leadership development for them throughout the year.

  • Serves as primary liaison for New Deac Week and other university and college/school orientation activities.

  • Coordinates regular community gatherings including Service of Remembrance Lovefeast etc.; coordinates gatherings or vigils in response to crises on or beyond campus.

  • In collaboration with Advancement and Human Resources maintain a list of Wake Forest University students faculty staff alumni and friends who have died.

  • Establish and oversee a system of residence hall school/college and/or departmental OC liaisons.

Religious Life (35%)

  • Support a vibrant campus community of diverse religious spiritual and secular worldviews.

  • Provide oversight and support for student religious life organizations.

  • Provide resources support and advice to Religious Life Professionals (RLPs).

  • Provide guidance to informal and formal emerging student religious groups including access to emerging ministry funds information about securing space on campus connection to local or national religious life organizations and advice on formalizing presence on campus as a student religious life organization.

  • Lead campus programming and training to promote religious literacy and combat religion-based discrimination.

  • Coordinate development of the religious observances calendar religious accommodations policies and communication regarding observances and accommodations to students faculty and staff.

Systems Processes and Resources (10%)

  • Manage budget and finance related to relevant programming and work.

  • Manage communications related to relevant programming and work.

  • Participate in OC program and event assessment practices.

Other Functions:

  • Support OC programming and work in the areas of Interfaith Engagement and Spiritual Life and Lived Belief as needed.

  • Participation in Divisional and University Administration such as committee work hiring processes events etc. as needed.

Required Education Knowledge Skills Abilities:

  • Masters degree in divinity religious studies theology or a related field.

  • Four or more years in ministry or related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • One unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) from an ACPE accredited training program or the ability to complete one unit within the first year of employment.

  • General knowledge about diverse religious spiritual and secular worldviews especially Christianity Hinduism Islam and Judaism.

  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Collaborative and detail-oriented with ability to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Preferred Education Knowledge Skills Abilities:

  • Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) board-certification eligibility and/or four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE).

  • Research or professional doctorate in a relevant field (eg PhD EdD DMin).

  • Proficiency in the use of social media platforms.

Accountabilities:
