GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Perform a variety of journey-level maintenance and repair work essential to the function of county buildings to include operation monitoring adjustment and repair.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor or designee who assigns and outlines work projects and inspect results for compliance with departmental standards applicable codes and regulations. Receives training work assignments and general guidance on technical aspects of work from a Building Maintenance Specialist Senior.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervision of employees is not a responsibility of positions in this classification. May provide training to others as part of assigned duties.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the journey-level class within the Building Maintenance series. Employees at this level are expected to perform their job functions with only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise. They are aware of the operating procedures and policies within the unit and are expected to use independence of direction and judgment in carrying out their duties.

Typical Duties - Duties include but are not limited to the following

  1. Perform maintenance tasks at one or more of our main campuses: Center Street Downtown Jail and Public Works; and other in-Salem campus buildings and equipment including some leased facilities. Commonly accomplished through painting carpentry plumbing remodeling plastering sheet-rocking framing minor electrical mechanical troubleshooting and repair HVAC troubleshooting and repair pneumatic and electrical control wiring boiler operation and welding.
  2. Perform comprehensive maintenance and repair of HVAC systems electronic controls air balancing fire alarm and smoke evacuation air handlers fan powered boxes heating coils boilers water heaters condensing units exhaust fans pumps motors electronic kitchen hoods dampers pipe and duct work.
  3. Work closely with the Facilities Maintenance Sr./Lead Worker Facility Analysts Project Management Coordinators and Supervisor to inform the Department Head on contract and bid needs project outlines manpower needs material and time frames for facility projects.
  4. Understand and apply blueprint and schematic diagram understanding on various tasks and projects.
  5. Complete work orders on time and according to department standards.
  6. Safely operate hand and power tools.
  7. Establish and maintain positive and professional working relationships with coworkers customers other agencies and the public.
  8. Organize and prioritize workload.
  9. Work without close supervision.
  10. Assist in the training of new and existing staff.
  11. Support and assist other maintenance workers when need arises.
  12. Other duties as assigned by your supervisor.

Requirements for the Position

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
  1. Graduation from high school or equivalent; AND
  2. Four years of directly related and documented work experience; OR
  3. Any satisfactory combination of work education training or experience relevant to the position as determined by Marion County.

PREFERENCES
Preference given for possession of a State of Oregon Apprenticeship and Training Council Journeymans card for one of the following trades: Stationary Engineer HVAC/R Plumber or closely related trades.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • The finalist for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check including finger printing; however conviction of a crime may not necessarily disqualify an individual for this position.
  • Must possess a current drivers license in the applicants state of residence and an acceptable driving history. Marion County will obtain a copy of the driving record for all qualified applicants from Driver and Motor Vehicle Services and review the driving record according to the Marion County policy and procedure for Driving on County Business.   • Typical work schedule: Tuesday through Saturday orSunday through Thursday 7:30am- 4:00pm with flexibility depending on the needs of the department and program.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Journey-level knowledge of methods and techniques used in one or more of the following trades carpentry plumbing electrical wiring and repair tile setting and painting steam fitting boiler operation and repair arc and acetylene welding plastering and general mechanical repair.

Substantial skills and abilities to use and operate hand and power tools necessary to building and mechanical maintenance; plan and organize work; read understand and work from mechanical electrical and structural blueprints and schematic diagrams; follow written and oral instructions; perform skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of county buildings equipment and furnishings; establish and maintain professional and cooperative working relationships with other employees vendors and contractors; operate a motor vehicle; understand and exhibit sound preventive maintenance skills demonstrate the ability to identify report and correct malfunctioning equipment and seek out opportunities to improve the maintenance security and efficiency of county facilities.

PUBLIC SERVICE LOAN FORGIVENESS
Marion County is a qualifying public employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program full-time employees working at the County may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance on Direct Student Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan.
