PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Facilitate students with disabilities achievement in the curriculum area; the teacher is
responsible for contributing to the educational system asawhole and to the growth of
each student; the teacher shall assist each student in developing skills acquiring
knowledge and achieving maximumpotential.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education/Certification:
Bachelors degree from an accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements for subject/level assigned
Hold a Texas teaching certification in Deaf and SeverelyHard of Hearing OR Hearing Impaired OR
Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing: EC-12
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of assigned curriculum; knowledge of instructional methods
Knowledge of or ability to learn and use behavior management intervention techniques
Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
Knowledge of Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal-setting process and implementation
Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs
Lesson planning and presentation skills
Conflict resolution skills
Classroom management skills
Strong planning organizational communication and interpersonal skills
Communicate in oral and written form in English
Technology skills as related to classroom presentation and record-keeping
Skilled in the use of test and evaluations for assessing student achievement
Knowledge of federal and state regulations board policies and operational guidelines
Ability to communicate in sign language proficiently
WORK CONDITIONS
Tools/Equipment Used:Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.
Posture:Frequent standing and walking; bending/stooping and reaching fully above head pushing pulling and twisting
Motion:Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; reaching
Lifting:May require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities control behavior through physical restraint assist non-ambulatory students and lift and move adaptive and other classroom equipment
Environment:May work prolonged or irregular hours; attend after school and nighttime activities occasionally; work inside and outside (exposure to sun heat cold and inclement weather) exposure to noise; exposure to biological hazards; occasional districtwide and statewide travel
Mental Demands:Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; ability to respond to needs in a timely manner in a high-stress environment
Regular Attendance is an essential function
Minimum Experience:
At least one year of student teaching or approved internship
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Collaborate with students parents and other members of staff to develop IEP through the ARD Committee process for each student assigned and present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency board policies and administrative regulations.
- Implement an instructional therapeutic or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required.
- Conduct assessment of student learning styles. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies activities materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
- Present subject matter effectively and according to guidelines established by IEP. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media including technology to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned
- Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula as needed and assist special education students in regular classes with assignments.
- Participate in ARD Committee meetings on a regular basis.
- Participate in selection of books equipment and other instructional media.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formative and summative assessments and provide progress reports as required.
- Provide or supervise personal care medical care and feeding of students as stated in IEP.
- Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by campus principal.
- Consult district and outside resource people regarding education social medical and personal needs of students.
- Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical social and emotional development of students.
- Manage student behavior and administer discipline including intervening in crisis situations and physically restraining students as necessary according to IEP.
- Consult with classroom teachers regarding management of student behavior according to IEP
- Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and/or volunteer(s).
- Employ the use of technology in the teaching/learning process.
- Present for students a positive role model that supports the mission of the school district.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
- Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents.
- Maintain a positive and professional relationship with all colleagues students parents and community members through effective communication both verbally and written.
- Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
- Participate in the district staff development program to improve job-related skills.
- Participate and positively contribute to grade level campus level and district level collaboration.
- Demonstrate interest and initiative in professional improvement.
- Demonstrate behavior that is professional ethical and responsible.
- Keep informed of and comply with state district and school regulations.
- Compile maintain and file all reports records and other documents required.
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings and professional development activities and serve on staff committees as required.
- Comply with state district and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers including the Texas Educator Code of Ethics.
