Job Description
Purpose/Description
Required Knowledge
- Building and Construction Knowledge of materials methods and the tools involved in the construction or repair of structures such as highways and roads.
Required Tasks
- Major Duties:
- Perform maintenance on bridges and attenuators.
- Perform scaling on bridges install and maintain false decking shore up holes repair holes in bridge decks.
- Saw cut hammer spots repair joints and install temporary supports.
- Perform attenuator work such as using torches assemble and disassemble fender panels and diaphragms and cartridges.
- Use power tools to repair concrete median walls and install guard rail.
- Clean out sumps of pump houses.
- Operate lift trucks and dump trucks working from lifts.
- Climb ladders - working at heights.
- Use torches and welders.
- Sweep and shovel materials.
- Other duties:
- Record work.
- Lay out and place steel.
- Build form work.
- Preform general cleaning duties of buildings and properties.
- Maintain a safe and acceptable driving records (no more than 7 points)
- Other related duties and special projects as assigned.
- Specific types of tools utilized
- Lubricate equipment to allow proper functioning.
- Maintain work equipment or machinery.
- Repair structural components.
- Replace worn damaged or defective mechanical parts.
Educational Requirements
- A High School Diploma or its equivalent; AND
- A valid State of Michigan Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with an A designation and N designation (including airbrake test); AND
Experience Requirements
- At least one (1) year full-time paid experience working in the construction industry maintaining and repairing structures or equipment; AND
- An acceptable safe driving record - No more than 7 points.
- Candidates must within the first four (4) months of their probationary period obtain an N endorsement. If the CDL endorsement is not obtained the employee will be removed from the Bridge Worker position pursuant to the Department of Personnel/Human Resources and Department of Public Services procedures.
